Cyrus Gray Update?

Postby Mustang98 » Tue Sep 11, 2007 8:46 pm

Any updates on Cyrus Gray? How is he doing so far this season? Any word on which school he is leaning towards?

Rivals said he visited the SMU/NTSU game. Didn't stay until the end. Commented they sure were throwing the ball around. Then said he's not willing to narrow his schools down yet.

That doesn't sound too good. Does the coaching staff listen to and process that kind of feedback from recruits? If so, I would hope Bennent or the recruiting coordinator would have a good answer for him to keep SMU high on his list.

Well, if we had a back of Gray's quality, I bet we would not have to throw as much don't you think ?

According to Rivals, Gray is going to visit Notre Dame the weekend that they play Navy. Gray plans to make several other trips — including one to Louisville, California and Florida — but Notre Dame is the first to make the calendar. No mention of SMU in the update.

I would doubt we see any committments before the 6th win or the 7th loss. That would go for players and coaches.

He ain't coming to SMU so you can delete this thread from this board. The only threads relevant at this time are 1) who the next coach will be next year 2) why was Bennett allowed to stay for 6 seasons without success, and 3) the reasons for SMU's pathetic football program aside from half-rear coaching.

He might not have said it correctly, but we won't be getting any commits while everyone and their brother is pretty assured our head coach won't be coming back.

Don't be so sure about that. First, he hasn't committed. Second, if he's smart and evaluates properly whoever succeeds Bennett, then he may be open-minded about it. Third, he hasn't told us no thanks, either -- from what I can tell.

We don't know. Figure roughly 2 months between the new coach starting and signing day. We're up against some very good programs, but the good recruiters find a way.

I'm not dismissing our chances.

Up for Grabs?

"Notre Dame is just a school that sticks out right now," Cyrus Gray said. "It's a big name school and they've got a great alumni base. "I know they've been pretty shaky this year, but I don't think it's too bad. It looks bad on paper, but they are rebuilding and I think it won't take them too long. They've got like the best recruiting class in the country for 2008 coming in and..."

Cyrus Gray, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound four-star running back from DeSoto, Texas, says he continues to feel very open-minded. He has, however, set up an official visit to Notre Dame for their Nov. 3 game against Navy.
"Notre Dame is just a school that sticks out right now," Gray said. "It's a big name school and they've got a great alumni base.

"I know they've been pretty shaky this year, but I don't think it's too bad. It looks bad on paper, but they are rebuilding and I think it won't take them too long," he said. "They've got like the best recruiting class in the country for 2008 coming in and I think good things will happen."

Gray, ranked the nation's No. 9 running back by Scout.com, has over 50 offers. He still won't name a favorite despite his open admiration of the Irish.

"I still don't really have a top five, it's more like a top 11," he said. "I just want to take my official visits and maybe even take a few unofficial visits. I want to see how the players are and how they interact and I want to get to know the coaches better."

Although Notre Dame is Gray's only set official visit thus far, he says he knows which other trips he'd like to take. "I'm planning on visiting Louisville, California and Florida for sure," Gray said. "The last trip is still up for grabs. It might be Miami, Penn State, Kansas, Texas A&M or even SMU. Those are the 11 that I'm looking at."

Gray, who lives within 30 mins from SMU, has already attended a Mustangs' game this season and hopes to catch an A&M game as well.

The school that has impressed Gray the most so far this season is Cal. "They have a great record and are ranked number three right now," he said. "They are really doing great on offense and compete really hard too. They are really impressing me.

"But Florida is a great team too," he said. "I didn't get to see the Auburn game, but it's a big rivalry game and I guess Auburn just stepped it up for that game.

"Penn State has also been pretty good," he said. "But with them, like with Notre Dame, it's more about their tradition and history that I like. They have a big-time program and have it all…great degree, great fans, great history, great coaches. It's an amazing program."

Gray has helped lead his team to a 3-1 record while playing quarterback. He's rushed for 700 yards and nine touchdowns on 64 carries. He also passed for about 100 yards and one touchdown.

He reports a 3.2 core GPA and is taking the ACT on Oct. 27.
