Interesting tidbit on SMU...

"6. Phil Bennett - A bye week and losses by some other coaches gave Bennett a reprieve this week, but the rest of the Conference USA schedule awaits. Very simple, with 7 games remaining, Bennett needs to win 5 of them to keep his job. Possible, but not very likely. It looks like the Mustangs will be looking for a new coach in the off-season, and with their facilities, their proximity to Dallas, and the ability to put one's stamp on the program, this will be a very good job for someone."

Maybe so, but that's the kind of name that I think we're likely to wind up with. Much as we'd like it, I don't think we'll get someone that doesn't need a follow-up description (i.e. Terry Bowden). Rather, we'll get someone that average Joe on the street hasn't heard of. "Y'know, we got a new HC, and he's great!" "Really? Who?" "so and so." "Who's that?" "Well, he did really well at [non descript BCS school that has had moderate success], and he coached [NFL name not unlike Terence Newman, Dat Nguyen, Mark Simoneau]."

Actually Christensen wouldn't be too bad of a hire, at least for the offense. Look at how he has developed Chase Daniel, who at times looked lost his freshman year and now he's being touted for the Heisman next year.
Daniel and JW were very comparable coming out of high school but Daniel got more recognition being from Southlake U. JW has better running ability, but Daniel throws a better longball. Both are similar in size, JW is just slightly taller.
I still would like to see Bowden, but wouldn't be too upset with Christensen.

really, I don't pay all that close attention to Big 12 accolades, but wasn't he the Newcomer of the Year as a Freshman. I'd agree all freshman cost you games though. BTW Daniels was the No. 1 rated QB coming out of Texas as a Senior.

the funny thing is, he was a much better HS qb then riley (although i think riley is a little faster). wasnt chase committed to OU?

No I guess he played only part time as a freshman-I guess Brad Smith was still there. Still he played well and as noted he was National High School Player of the Year. Wasn't a big surprise he has been so outstanding.

2005 SEASON
The 2004 EA Sports National High School Player of the Year who won the backup job in fall camp, despite his true freshman status ... Saw action in 10 games, as Tiger coaches tried to give him a series or two in most games to prepare him for the future ... Completed nearly 60% of his passes, going 38-of-66 for 347 yards and 1 TD, with 2 INTs ... Also rushed 39 times for 57 yards and 1 TD .

At the present time, I will adhere to what I said when SMU was hiring an AD and a basketball coach. Each time, someone would ask who can SMU possibly get to take this awful job. In each case, I said there would be quality candidates; the challenge would be picking the right one. In each case, there actually were quality candidates. In each case, SMU hired individuals better than most people imagined SMU was capable of getting.

Maybe that won't happen the next time, but you might as well wait to find out.

if you remember, they would line up chase or brad smith at wr at various times through out the season and try to confuse the defense

I saw both Daniel and Willis play in high school numerous times and the reason Daniel got more recognition was Southlake U going undefeated for 2 years and winning state. In fact, JW's only losses his senior year was to Southlake and possibly could have beaten them in the playoffs except Willis was playing on a badly sprained ankle.

One thing a lot of people don't realize about Southlake is they actually should have 2 high schools, but the district decided not to split the "talent pool" so the Juniors and Seniors go to 1 high school, and the frosh and soph goes to the other. Positive is you always have an "all-star" team of best athletes, negative is only 1/2 the kids in the district get to experience playing high school athletics.

Just think what a team Dallas ISD would have if they combined say Carter and Skyline, that's essentially what Southlake does.

Oh well, I digress, it just bugs me Soutlhlake gets all the recognition for being such a powerhouse when they really aren't playing on the same level of playing field of the other schools that split the talent into 2 high schools.

Look what has happened to Plano since they split that school into about 5-6 High Schools. The Dominance is gone. This has been the case throughout Texas High School Football-Coaches look for burgeoning population with 1 High School.
