Southlake is almost built out, so as of now there is no chance of southlake splitting... plano is much larger then southlake anyways.

Even though plano now has 3 high schools they still fare pretty well in 5A. Plano West 3 years ago lost to a denton ryan team led by JW in regionals, and Plano 2 years ago lost to southlake in the quarterfinals after plano let nearly the entire game. And last year plano east also made it to quarterfinals. One of the positives that splitting high schools is that it can create great city rivalries.

In fact, JW's only losses his senior year was to Southlake and possibly could have beaten them in the playoffs except Willis was playing on a badly sprained ankle.

One thing a lot of people don't realize about Southlake is they actually should have 2 high schools, but the district decided not to split the "talent pool" so the Juniors and Seniors go to 1 high school, and the frosh and soph goes to the other. Positive is you always have an "all-star" team of best athletes, negative is only 1/2 the kids in the district get to experience playing high school athletics.

Just think what a team Dallas ISD would have if they combined say Carter and Skyline, that's essentially what Southlake does.

Oh well, I digress, it just bugs me Soutlhlake gets all the recognition for being such a powerhouse when they really aren't playing on the same level of playing field of the other schools that split the talent into 2 high schools.

Plano has been doing this since the 80s. This is not unique to SLC.

They have 3 Jr/Sr highs, like SLC

Plano has more than 3 high schools. A couple of them just opened up in the last 5 years or so. And "doing pretty well" ain't dominating like in the 70s thru 90s.

UPDATE: Hmm I guess I'm wrong-they call about 5 schools high schools but they aren't Senior High Schools. I always thought they would eventually compete as Senior High Schools after a full Class became Seniors after they were built.

"Plano East's graduating classes are among the largest for high schools in the United States. Plano East's Class of 2005, with 1220 graduates, was the largest high school graduating class in the U.S. that year."

"Enrollment at Carroll has ballooned from 524 in 1988, when Carroll was 16-0 and won the first of three state Class 3A titles, to 2,411 in 2005. "

remember Southlake has won both Texas 5A Big School and Small School Championships. Texas Football has the official enrollment figures for each high school in the state-since that is how you determine which schools go into the Big School or Little School State Championship brackets. Last time I looked there were plenty of schools bigger than Southlake.

Converse Judson down here did that 1 big high school thing for years just so they could dominate in sports. At one time, Judson had well over 6,000 kids in one HS. Funny how since a new high school finally was built in that district and their enrollment is down that Judson barely makes playoffs, if at all.

You will see the same thing with Smithson Valley down here in a few years. Once a new high school is completed out there the talent pool will be split. Coach Hill actually addressed that concern at a meeting end of last year as he knows the effect it will have.

Dodge certainly was/is a great coach, but he was in a unique situation where he had 1 high school and all the kids were taught his system from pee wee on up.
