How about a great gameday coach.

Their coach is a great recruiter and calls decent plays. He also recruited a very good QB. Academically Wake has always been a little lower on the chain than Duke, Vandy, Rice, Northwestern, and Stanford. They are similar to Baylor. They also have Baptist roots. I kind of thought their benefactor was the Reynolds family since they're in Winston-Salem and there is some rivalry between the RJR Group and Altria, its also a Virginia (Altria) North Carolina (RJR) thing. But BCS money and being in the ACC means a lot. They made their name in basketball with Tim Duncan and have grown that into football. I suspect that was the model Pye was trying to follow, but it never happened.
