I just want to express my appreication for the coaches blog. It is very interesting to learn what a BB headcoach is really doing to better the program and how he is working to accomplish his goals.

It is always a very interesting read and it is updated every 2 or 3 days.

Coach D, thanks for the insight. We are looking forward to finally seeing SMU Basketball's potential. Too long have we sat around and watched a university who has never really committed to athletics.

Orsini and you prove that SMU has committed and is willing to do whatever it takes to win. I can easily say we are committed to you.

I never read all the way to the bottom of a screen, so I didn't see this. Thanks for the heads up. I sent my appreciation comments directly to coach.

how about if he just gets some Ws and quits complaining in the DMN about attendance - we don't really care who we play - just get some Ws - the fans will come around

Weak sauce! The man will be playing mostly frosh, and is still under-talented. 2 more years and no excuses, but he inherited a sad,sad program and is rebuilding it quickly. Wins won't come easy this year, but we'll be in it to win it when this current frosh class is juniors. Patience, the writing is on the wall

This isn't Chapel Hill or South Bend where everything revolves around our program. For one, we have to fight for attention with a successful NBA franchise, Big 12 basketball, a successful NHL program for the whole season, and the Dallas Cowboys for the first half of the season. In order to build a fan base, we have to make a run and make a statement. If we start winning, fans will come. Georgetown had to move from McDonough Hall (5,000) to the US Air Arena, and then MCI/Verizon Center after their run with Patrick Ewing. They still play BE games at Verizon and still get great crowds for those games. George Mason had virtually no fans coming to the Patriot Center until their run and suddenly had sellouts. Maryland won the National Championship and had to build the Comcast Center to accommodate the larger crowds. George Washington sells out games even though it merely dances every couple of years. On the flip side, Navy rarely has a sellout (except for the Army or AF basketball game) since David Robinson left. This in a town that bleeds burgundy and gold and sells out Wizards games. Winning gets attention. Losing gets the sound of chirping crickets.

Doherty's point on what - attendance?

If he can't get it done in 5 yrs and we don't get more butts in the seats, I guess we'll just be like Rice, field a program just for the sake of it...Dement was on the cusp with recruiting and Top 25.

No he wasn't, not even close. I don't know where you guys get this stuff. Dement recruited pretty darn well at SMU, but he never truly competed for titles in the WAC. His most talented squads were some of the least disciplined I've ever watched. Hell, he sold himself out as a coach to get some of those players, and they had the green light to a fault, nothing he could do. They defended the arc about as badly as any team in history. Beyond that, they underachieved and never saw the NCAAs, not even close.

No doubt, it was a more competitive time in SMU hoops than now, but it was still average at best. I'm not a huge fan of Doh as a bench coach, but the guy can recruit, its not really debateable.

what are you talking about? they basically had an ncaa bid locked up until Willie D bounce it off of his foot. they were in fact very close to turning a corner.

they were rated the No. 39 team in the Sagrin Ratings immediately before SMU gave away the two home games to TCU and Tulsa.

In a league that got one, maybe 2 NCAA bids, w/the tourney champion getting an automatic, we weren't close. We drop 2 at home, to end the season, and that's almost turning the corner? Those teams did one thing well, disappoint despite a decent talent level. The played undisciplined ball and should have been better. Willie D bouncing it off his foot, is pretty much the natural outcome of Willie D putting it on the floor.

I just hope Doh gets that type of talent, but gets them to mesh and play team ball. Mid-majors don't win by hot-dogging. They play D, find the open guy, set screens, shoot a good percentage, don't turn it over, board etc

Not even close...haha. I'm not saying he was greatness by any means. Yes, it was a very limited window of being decent - however if the ball doesn't go off Willie's knee... (as we've said above), They did compete and would have been at the top of this nonsense league right now. The Fresno State games were very exciting. Overall, they lacked discipline yes and I didn't like the way he coached. Sasser seemed to be able to do pretty much anything he wanted.

We've rehashed this many times.
