Master RecruiterModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Master RecruiterWho is considered the best recruiter in the state of Texas? Just a question.
It'd be hard to argue against Mack Brown, Bob Stoops possibly as well
Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
Ok State has gotten quite a bit of TX talent as has Missouri. Michigan always gets a couple as well (Ryan Mallett). Who recruits the best despite not having palatial facilities like UT or OU? There's got to be someone out there like Gillispie when he was at Illinois and got a lot of strong TX kids to play hoops up there, like Deron Williams.
Phil Bennett was widely acclaimed as a great pick-up for SMU.
Who widely acclaimed him? SMU tried to get a coach on the cheap which was their usual MO. They cannot make the same mistake this time.
Are we sure all of the academic walls have come down so we can go after the same players as Houston and Southern Miss?
By performance in the last few years it just might be Oscar Giles (15 Commitments all from National Ranked Players in 3 Years) former SMU assistant. SMU's recruiting has dropped off too since he went first to UH then to UT. Traditionally guys like former OU Head Coach John Blake was highly thought of. Former Baylor Bear Trooper Taylor has moved around and used to be at A&M and is considered one of the Top National Recruiters. Former Nebraska Assistant Turner Gill is another good recruiter now at Buffalo.
Others considered ace recruiters in the Texas area would be: 1) Brent Venables OU 2) Cale Gundy OU 3) Ken Rucker UT 4) Bruce Chambers is getting a lot of big names at UT. 5) Mac McWhorter UT Rivals tracks the Coach who recruited each prospect so its interesting to follow. A lot of the names have been picked over as many UT Coaches have gone on to new head jobs. Mike Stoops left for Arizona. Where is Jon Blake now-at Nebraska?
More on Turner Gill:
Gill, 44, who spent the 2005 season serving as Player Development Director and Offensive Assistant with the Green Bay Packers, was lauded as one of the nation's top recruiters while an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1992-2004. The Cornhuskers won national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997 during that span. Not saying he's my first choice but this is a guy who is building his resume and scratching his way to the Top. We could do a lot worse than strongly consider Turner Gill. Let's see how he finishes the year.
I would argue that recruiting for UT or OU is about the same as recruiting at SMU as driving a Formula 1 race car and changing gas at the Speede-oil. UT has essentially has a line of HS "students" who would give their left nut to play there. The SMU coaches have to do a lot more of a sell, to convince the kids to consider our program.
This is no way to say that any of these coaches are not great recruiters, or could be the answer here on the Hilltop. But, to equate their ability to recruit to UT with their proposed ability to recruit to SMU is putting the cart well before the horse.
X's and O's are a whole lot easier if you're very, very good at recruiting. The issue of course is which comes first? I believe we need to get the best talent out there to SMU. But, and this is a huge But, why did Bennett fail to get them? I suspect that he was on Stallion's list of great recruiters when he was a K-State. He clearly was wired into North Texas schools. Why did he fail? What did he do and what didn't he do that caused us to lose out in recruiting battles? That is the question the clearly needs to be addressed, first. Was it that we handicapped him early in his tenure with some of our silly restrictions so that after the 0-12 season, he was damaged good in the eyes of recruits? Was it that he aimed too high? Was it that he aimed too low? Let's address the questions on why we aren't getting the best players out there and that will determine whether we need to get a coach who is a great recruiter but weak on X's and O's. Or whether we need to get the best tactician out there, settle for whatever talent we get and try to beat them through creativity and drive, and hoping of course that if wins come, recruits with greater talent will follow.
