Overall, they lacked discipline yes and I didn't like the way he coached. Sasser seemed to be able to do pretty much anything he wanted.
We've rehashed this many times.
I can agree w/all of that, and I'm not saying Doh is all-world, just a very good recruiter. I went to SMU & Maryland, and personally watched his implosion at UNC. It was ugly, and some in the league still laugh at his ability on the bench. That said, he's universally respected as an evaluator and recruiter. In short, that's what it takes at SMU. Only way to be competitive is to have players. As we've discussed, the Sasser teams were pseudo-competitive, and it was merely b/c of talent. IF Doh can amass that sort of talent, and infuse a little discipline, we'll still be worse than Memphis.

is this Ponybacker from back in the day? I remember that Maryland connection. if so, definitely respect your hoop opinion but as a fan I fdid feel like that team was very close that year, the WAC was respectable then with Fresno, Tulsa, TCU. Plus we were getting good local players. I like SMU to recruit nationally yeah, but does that mean you can't recruit your backyard too? We are in on nobody in Dallas and really no top players in texas. I do like this current group of freshman that Doherty has, but there is not an early impact player in the group. Definitely no sassers or bhops. Remember Sassers freshman year when we beat Tech at Moody and he was a big part of it? Hell, I just wish we had a game against Tech or somebody this year, much less beat em.

Wow, I appreciate you remembering me. At one point, I was Ponybacker. Thanks for the props.
I'd definitely like to have a larger presence in the Metroplex as well, but we did just grab Nyakundi, Malone, Harp which is three Texans in 07. Spencer in 06 is a Texan as well. I'm a little perplexed about the 08 class, and was really ready to question some of the signings till Otis. I don't think any of the 08 verbals are the go to type. A kid that can just will you a hoop.
I agree, nobody in the 07 class resembles Sasser. Heck, as of now I don't see a Q or Damon either. These guys are Top 250 players at best, not Top 75 like Sasser was. We do need an impact kid, or incredibly quick development out of the kids we do have. My hope is that increased cohesiveness, and some serious team work, can offset some of our limitations.
What scares me, even though I fully admit to not being completely caught up on our ship count, is that we're offering huge classes, back-to back. We need a difference-maker in 09 or attrition, if we can't find a sniper.
