Re: Mustang Mania 25 years later (link)Great article, ( Not the A-Turf one )
I for one would love to see something like that reoccur at SMU. He had corporations sponsoring T-shirts, caps, pins and, most of all, tickets. "I remember doing a thing with the Ford dealers in town," Ford said. "We promoted it till I was sick of it, but because we were the Mustangs and my name was Ford and I was the quarterback, we got the Ford dealers to give away two tickets to anyone who test drove a Mustang. "It was always stuff like that." I have talked to anyone how would listen about "why SMU items / products are not out there & everywhere in the metro-plex. Ticket outlets, merchandise (not just football) sport passes in any combinations, el Mustang Mania style. "If you make it...They will buy" just get the product out there. For the last two years I have tried to obtain various mustang items i.e Perina head cover for my driver (Sprit shop say that there is not a demand) other outlet say they need SMU's permission, I would buy 50 and give them away at the golf courses. Power Mustangs "Now is the Time" They will believe in #PonyUp
Re: Mustang Mania 25 years later (link)I remember walking up to the locker rooms in 1976 when Jerry Lewis was there to receive the donation money. He looked as stoned as anyone I had ever seen (then and since). Now the world knows about Jerry the pill popper but then he was a great entertainer with a great cause. It was a moment that shattered a lot of myths I had about entertainers. It was great being a part of the hype and seeing the stands filled. Perhaps it can happen again.
Re: Mustang Mania 25 years later (link)That's awesome, smoo power!
(Although I get the sense you might have too much time on your hands....) Proud to be a PonyFan
Re: Mustang Mania 25 years later (link)Way too much time. :p
Re: Mustang Mania 25 years later (link)I have SMU head covers. Got em at Edwin Watts. They have several different styles.
But it drives me crazy when I am out at a local store and they have UT, A&M, Tech, even Baylor and TCU gear, but nothing SMU. I was at a scrapbook store that had a whole section with background papers and accents for friggin' TCU but not SMU. I don't know if that's because we protect our licenses more closely, or it's just a matter of supply and demand. I always make a point to tell the manager how annoyed I am that they don't carry the only local team's stuff, just in case it's the store's choice.
