Short List
The possible coaches being mentioned on this board are so far off base it sickens me. PB was the best possible candidate at the time and continues to be, unless we can get someone like Chris Wilson, DE/ST coach at OU, who was a finalist when PB was hired. Chris is from the Dallas area. The only other option is to get a big name coach with issues like Fran or Price at UTEP and the board of regents will never go for that. We are stuck in a rut because we are SMU. And people stop bringing up the BB coach who could not make it at his own school, where talent just walks through the door daily!

I think you have a man-crush on this Chris Wilson. Everybody's been whining that we don't have a special teams coach.

I'm at a loss to understand the sense behind this comment. Sir, if you'll remember Bill Guthridge did a great job of taking that program and running it off the road and caused UNC to miss the NCAA tournament for the first time in X years. So I guess the talent DIDN'T WALK THROUGH THE DOOR until Doherty returned and found the likes of Scott May and Felton to bring it back.
And Matt already covered that he didn't survive at UNC because his tactics caused an insurrection. He said he's atoned for it. I'll believe it until proven otherwise.
As for Phil's replacement, it will depend on who Orsini has in mind. Until then, we'll just have to wait and see.

My point was simple, why bring in someone who has trouble winning where there is talent.

Solich is having a rough year at Ohio. The CMU coach looks better.
Paul Johnson (Navy) will get a look...no doubt.
If I were Paul Johnson, I would stay at Navy, one of the best coaching jobs in college FB. Besides they are more visible than we are or will be. With Notre Dame and Army always on your schedule, you get two very big media events and a team is admired by everyone.
What are you high on? Best coaching job in America? I don't think so...it's prestigious, but he'd take a leg up any time (not that SMU is).
Problem is that he makes 1.5mm...
It will take $1 to $1.5 Mil to get someone to take the job. PB was highly thought of when he came here inspite of what we think now. No coach of anyworth would want this job. If someone with a name dose take it I would not be surprised if we had to lay out around $1.5 M and guarantee at least 5 or 6 years. I too am running out of time. I don't know if I will last another 5 yr plan. The other thing a new coach might ask for in addition to $1.5 is an indoor practice building. That is the new recruiting tool.

What I am high on is excellence and Paul Johnson has it as does the service academies, which annually produce outstanding men and women to serve our country. What is not to like at Annapolis (West Point, Colorado Springs), unless your only interest is money and trying to satisfy the weekly hunger of state school fanatics?
My original point is SMU would not be a step up for Johnson. I would stay at Navy, where he is tenured for life. Does he need greater challenges than this current one, i.e. playing mano-a-mano with BCS schools when you are out weighted and probably less skilled? I give him credit and suggest leaving brings the endless pursuit of pleasing crazy fans, who will have much less patience. Paul would then on a merry-go-round and will leave his next school in three to four years. Then repeat.
Give me the long tenured guys Bowden, Paterno, Osborne, Fulmer, etc. Rent a coach is a difficult strategy to perpetuate.

Finally, a poster on the FB Board, who really understands priorities!

New SMU coach
I have been reading all the posting regarding the qualifications the pony
fans are wanting in a new coach. Qualifications required: College head coaching experience, Dallas area ties, and good recruiting abilities.
Maybe the SMU bosses should consider Darrell Dickey.
Darrell Dickey has head coaching experience (he was successfull at NT)
Darrell has Dallas ties, and is known throughout the state. He could
recruit some very good kids to come to SMU.

Why would we want a NTSU reject?

Matt Doherty won a lot his first year at UNC, however, Bill Guthridge is the worst recruiter in the world and left the cupboard bare for Matt Doherty. As a result, UNC was mediocre-bad in Doherty's 2nd and 3rd years.
