Times-Picayune Article: DP ReduxPony Up
Does anybody else think that PB's "woe is me, the DP still reverberates through SMU" bit is weak [deleted]?
The guy knew about the job before he took it, and it comes off like he thinks the DP is the reason this team isn't living up to expectations. Pathetic...
He specifically mentioned the following policies (ie admissions/curriculum)and events(SWC disbanding) have (permanently) changed:
"I don't think that there is any doubt (the school is still impacted by the death penalty)," Mustangs Coach Phil Bennett said. "We are the only school in history to ever have it. It changed the admissions. It changed everything here. It changed the curriculum. And then you lose your affiliation with a BCS conference in the Southwest Conference, so we got the double-whammy. This place has been hit." What do you think he meant? I just hope he gets pissed off after a game or during a news conference and says exactly what is on his mind. Something like "I'm a MAN-I'm 40. This school is Full of [deleted] if it thinks we're getting beat just because of poor coaching. ectera ectera ectera."
along the lines of:
"Our illustirious leader (Copeland) say he's seen enough? Well, I've HAD enough." (storms out of press conference) ~ Mike Cavan after lameduck 19-11 loss to North Carolina
Cavan's Last Stand
Experiencing a finale of a different sort was Mike Cavan, who officially became ex-coach of SMU after Saturday's game. After the Mustangs went 3-6 in their first nine games, Cavan was given the news Nov. 19 that he would be released at the end of the season. Despite his own lame-duck status, Cavan could not find any fault in his team's effort against the Tar Heels. "Our kids fought them as hard as they could fight them," Cavan said. "They've got great players at every position." After the game, Cavan seemed intent on getting on with his life, starting with an abbreviated press conference that concluded with an apparent shot at Jim Copeland, SMU's athletic director. Said Cavan: "In the words of our illustrious leader, he's seen enough, I've had enough. How's that hit you?"
Will do. But I'll check on you guys periodically.
In the words of one Bluto Blutarsky in Animal House. "Over, nothing is over until we decide it is. Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor?"
Although I can kinda hear Don Meredith singing "Goodnight Irene" right about now. Bennett has a lot of class. I suspect, he'll leave with class. He got another year when a lot of coaches would have been let go. He knows he was hired to win. He knew he had it easier than Cavan and than Rosseley as far as restrictions were concerned. I don't think he fully appreciated the difficulty of recruiting outside of a BCS conference or the difficulty that curriculum would play. That's why the next coach needs to have some appreciation of what its like recruiting outside of the BCS. And by the way, Doh doesn't have that handicap because in basketball every team has a real shot at the National Title if they can win in their conference.
