Flutie Calls out Craig James with a "Norm dad joke"
From the Seattle Post-Intelligence Sports Blog:

Not that I'm suddenly becoming a media critic, but did anyone else notice this exchange between Craig James and Doug Flutie on ESPN's broadcast Thursday night of the South Florida Rutgers game?
Along with play-by-play guy Chris Fowler, the fellas were discussing before the start of the third quarter Rutgers tailback Ray Rice's high number of carries...
Flutie to James (a former star running back at SMU): When you were in college you would have loved that MONEY carries... that many carries.
James: That "MONEY"?
Flutie: That's right... you went to SMU... love that money!
James: Oh come on!
Did Flutie take a shot at SMU, which suffered the so-called "Death Penalty" in 1986 after a massive pay-for-play scheme was uncovered by the NCAA?
You betcha.
James, for those who don't remember, was one half of the "Pony Express" backfield in the early 1980s with Eric Dickerson, when the old Southwest Conference was rife with cheating.
Fowler, a neat freak who might have been freaking over this exchange, quickly changed the subject.

Yes, his girlfriend was already attending school at SMU.
Sounds like a great, legal recruiting tactic. Stop recruiting the star players, recruit the girlfriends and offer them inducements like handbags and the other crap they like, then get them to nag their boyfriends to follow them here.

Back then Craig came to SMU because of his sweetheart...and he called up Dickerson and told him "come to SMU and we will make history" That was acoording to Ron Meyer. Meyer also told me he recruited Lance because the Highland Park people would have had his scalp if he didnt, but that he didnt expect Lance to ever play Q-Back at smu!

No one was better than Lance McIlhenny at running the option, which he did at HP, and then to perfection at SMU.Arkpony wrote:Meyer also told me he recruited Lance because the Highland Park people would have had his scalp if he didnt, but that he didnt expect Lance to ever play Q-Back at smu!
Meyer actually recruited TWO McIlhenny's to SMU. There was Lance's brother, Lott, as well. And, of course their father, Don, went to SMU, too.
Are the McIlhenny's SMU's version of the Mannings?
