I have been pondering this exact issue all day Sunday.

Our defense was worn out, Forte have punished them the entire game and they just didn't have much left, so a touchdown by Tulane in OT was almost a given.

Our offense had just consumated a 2 minute drill that was finished with a touchdown. At this point in the game, they were performing and executing. We had the momentum and I think the offense should have been given the chance to complete the win.

Even if we had missed the conversion, there were still 8 seconds left for the onsides kick.
Just send 'da money.

onside kicks are from the 30 this year. Even if you get the ball and the play lasts less than 8 seconds what are you going to do kick a 70 yard FG?

run the run, latteral, run, lateral, run, lateral, run play

or even a hail mary

or catch the onsides on the bounce and run it in for a TD

I have seen strange endings

At least with the 2 point conversion, you are still in control of the game, win or lose, and you keep the ball out of Forte's hands.

just lke I said-I think you all are all crazy. You are so desperate to find fault in any thing that Phil Bennett does that you are making things up. As Blog said, I couldn't find a single particularly bad call on Saturday. Hell if we could get Tulane off the field we could have put bigger numbers up. You don't go for a 2 point coversion trailing by 1 point AT HOME.

Stallion. All I am saying is I think we had the momentum to win in regulation. Going into OT was a probable loss.

Oh wait, that's what happened. Tulane TD in OT for a loss.

I think going for 1 was the right call in that situation. When we can consistently score on 1 play from there, then you can start to consider going for 2.

I think that sums it up quite well. Even defensively we were making the right calls. On Forte's long runs, we had guys in position to make the plays, we just couldn't tackle him. The only time we could "stop" their offense was when they tried some end around, etc. As long as they ran him off tackle/TE he was running downhill. What was to make us think that we would suddenly learn how to tackle him in overtime?

I agree that Bennett made the safe call on that and most coaches would have made that call. We did stop Tulane once or twice during the game.

I didn't have any problem with the extra point. Outside of that one long run our defense was doing a pretty good job on Tulane in the 4th quarter (relative, I guess, to the rest of the game) and we had been stuffed on that 1st and Goal from the 1 earlier, so I don't know how confident I would be given one play to go 2 yards. But that's just me.

You must have been watching a different game. Tulane had NOT worn out the defense. The defense came up with the needed stop to set up the tying offensive drive with a little more than a minute left. I'm sure they were tired, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that they could get another stop. The extra point to send it to OT was the right call.
