Daily Campus Ed BoardThey have an article in today's DC about why we should ditch the traditional sized Peruna, and get a full sized version. Also in the same article, they mention how everybody should pay attention to our traditions, and follow them. I guess the concept of 'hypocracy' is covered in grad school courses that they haven't taken yet.

Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardThat's really funny.

Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardI think they need to show the youngsters the utility of a small horse. Bring Peruna onto the field in a limo or a Hummer. Think the crowd would go nuts!
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardI think there is merit to the article. I think the younger crowd would certainly be able to identify more with a full sized horse. At least that is what I always thought when I was in school.
Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardYeah, well, it is in the Daily Campus tradition. I think the editorial board was smoking more than tobacco from time to time when I was there too.
How is the student body going to relate better to a full sized horse? How many Peruna handlers would it take to run the horse when we score? Oh, right. No offense. Well, that'll be fixed some day, and then what will we do? The Peruna tradition is one of SMU's best and most recognizable. I think it would be disastrous to change our spunky pony. Trample that tradition, and we might as well pack up and move to Denton (no offense to the UNT people, but tradition isn't one of their strong suits...) Support the Commitment! We're all SMU Mustangs fans- we should all be committed!
Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardPlease don't take this the wrong way, but they think that the little pony looks small and silly. At least I did. It is not a shot at the tradition, it just means that people have no idea what the little pony is all about. They would rather a big horse "Mustang". I am sitting here today, knowing more than most about peruna and I don't know much at all. The tradition is not being spread to the younger class.
It is just my opinion, but the only thing I find special about the pony is its name and the origin of its name.
Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardDon't mess with tradition. Peruna is cool and the run accross the field after a score with the handlers hangin on for dear life is fun. Unfortunately, Peruna may have forgotten how to run over the past 4-5 years.
Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardWTF? I challenge ANYONE on the DC editorial board to run with Peruna across the turf at Ford Stadium and stay on their feet! Will someone tell them to PLEASE 'put the pipe down'?
Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardDitch Peruna?!$%* Am I reading this correctly? Let's tell TU to replace Bevo with a monkey and tell the Aggies to replace Reville with a plastic Santa. Come on folks, where is your sense of tradition? How 'bout we replace the Daily Rag with a real newspaper?

Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardIt doesn't surprise me that the DC has written such a ridiculous editorial. The new j-school prof, Tony Pederson, is the former executive vice-president and senior editor of the Houston Chronicle...the ONLY major metropolitan daily newspaper in the U.S. that has NEVER won a Pulitzer Prize! (The now defunct Houston Post did!...but the Hearst Corporation had to buy The Houston Post and then shut it down to become a one newspaper town without any competition!) Pederson was a joke here in Houston and it's apparent that he's taken his carnival sideshow act to The Hilltop where he's now influencing would-be journalists at the Daily Campus.

Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardThe Daily Campus, Ed Board specifically, is usually a crock of s h i t. They always whine about not enough school spirit, even thought most students make NO effort to learn the songs or stay at the games. Instead the Ed Board always states that student spirit will be helped by symbolic visuals. They complained 4 years ago that our band, one of the most unique in the nation in look and sound, should be more like the TCU band. I believe the phrase was "complete with war-style marching and a flag corps." I call it high school band with fat girls twirling purple flags.
At some point last year, the school bought a Mustang Band CD and used it to be played over the phone sytem when people are on hold. The Ed Board complanied that this "cheapened" the effect of our school songs and made them not as important. Right, like the Ed Board is always there at the end of the game, pony ears up, singing varsity with the team in front of the student section. I think the problem is that most students at this school have the biggest case of [deleted] envy I have ever seen. They always want what's bigger or newer, without thought to tradition. Instead of going to games and supporting the team, I hear more students say "Why can't we be like Texas, that's REAL college football." Instead of embracing tradition, the ed board is always the first to ask "Why does the band do this...why can't we have this...why aren't we winning...why is my tuition high..." and on and on. The only thing I get out this attitude is the answer to the question "Why does SMU have a bad reputation as a bunch of whiny brats." Because, apparently, most students ARE a bunch of whiny brats. Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardBy the way, "that oversized labrador" once killed the Fordham ram by kicking it. If I were a Peruna handler, I'd go get Peruna tonight and sneak him up to the DC office and let him take a big old dump all over the editors' desks.

Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardHe also kicked BEVO in the stomach and sent him to his knees. Scared the Baylor Bear (the old big bear not the cubs) into the stands forcing a stoppage in the game. Tried to mate with the Tech Horse. And yes, he laid a great big steamer on the new carpet at Amon Carter Stadium and we won the game. That was the one time the Daily Campus got the headline correct: "SMU dumps on TCU". Yes, Peruna is unique and a great mascot. He also has some kid appeal, too. Because he is small, little kids feel they can come up and pet him. Who knows how many fans first saw SMU through a child's eyes by getting to pet the pony.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Daily Campus Ed Boardhe'll even let little babies sit on his back (although I wouldn't recommend it.) There was one time where a lady came up and sat her 6 month old baby down on his back, and then walked off to get a picture. Luckily one of the handlers was there to catch the kid before she slid off, otherwise it would have been really really bad. I can't think of a better mascot personally. He's exotic because he's not something that most people have in their backyard (like reville). He's mild mannered enough that little kids screams don't spook him, which means lots of little kids can get as close as they want, and pet and touch him (he doesn't mind), try that with a bear, or the buffalo from Colorado. Yet he still is feisty enough that he can seriously injure people if he so chooses, I know that after one game I had bruises from where he kicked me during one of the runs, and those bruises last a long time. He is afraid of noone, no matter how much bigger they are than he is, and he is entertaining. If you got a full size horse it would have to be so well trained that you would lose all the unpredictablitiy of our mascot, you would lose all the fire, and fight in the horse. It would just stand there on the sideline, and when he ran across the field you would either have to ride him (meaning he could no longer be a mustang) or trot him across the field which would look stupid because it would appear really lazy from the stands. With our shetland you can sprint him across the field (provided the handlers can keep up) and he looks like he is flying across the field, and about to kill someone. To top it all off all of the Peruna's have been shetlands from Peruna I back in the late 20's early 30's to Peruna VIII today. For a school that cries because it has no tradition, to get rid of the one thing that is uniquely ours and has such a long and colorful history with this university is just plain idiotic.

Re: Daily Campus Ed BoardDaily Campus staffers work harder than 95% of SMU's student body. The job requires 40+ hour work weeks while balancing their school work and social lives. They also make almost no money. Journalism is also the only major that involves one's homework being submitted for public consumption. (Art and dance, maybe, but they're harder to find.)
The DC staff is a diverse group of students doing the job because they want to. Without them, there would be no campus news published, no police reports and no crush party ads. The opinion section is just that - opinion. You don't have to agree with it. You also don't have to be a bunch of middle-aged arm chair quarterbacks who obviously have too much time on their hands if they can devote an afternoon to trashing student journalists and the DC.
