Re: Daily Campus Ed Board
Is it true that a member of the Culwell family killed the first Peruna and that ever since, they have donated/purchases Peruna for SMU?
Peruna is my mascot!

If Peruna was getting more chances to run, we might not have seen that sickening editorial. Even so, after reading it, I am at a loss for words. Does tradition mean NOTHING to today's youth? Peruna is a totally unique, bad-*ss mascot. Period.

Re: Daily Campus Ed Board
For BillBored,
I have a friend who writes for the Daily Campus and she said last night when they read the article to the staff, they all laughed and applauded the guy for "having balls to write that". My friend stuck up for our traditions and they all joked about her for being so silly. My point is that the article is misleading. They play the card of being so die-hard concerned fans but in reality they wrote the article just to push the envelope and to [deleted] people off. And just two days ago, they ragged on Campus Crusade for Christ for putting up "misleading" flyers about a talk on pornography. Hypocracy is the only tradition I see from the DC.
BillBored, answer me this: Do you honestly think they wrote this article to drum up school spirit? If you can answer yes, explain to me why you think that.

One of the staffers at the DC is Ryan Trimble (news desk editor). He's also a cheerleader/catch-a-girl-flipping-in-the-air squad member. :hmm: I wonder if he was the author of this silly piece of dung?

Re: Daily Campus Ed Board
There's campus news in the DC? Wow, it has been a long time since I read it. In my day it was just a Whine Page and a whole bunch of stories borowed from Knight Ridder.

BTW- Peruna is not a shetland. He is a minature horse.

Good catch, OP! Thanks! Isn't 'he' (a stallion) actually a 'she' (a mare)? Or is it a 'gelding'?Originally posted by OldPony:

Re: Daily Campus Ed Board
I believe the current one is a shetland, is a he, and if you've ever seen him near a female horse....well....he's definitely not a gelding. There have been female Peruna's in the past, the Culwell family has traditionally given every Peruna to the school, and I don't know if they were the ones that killed the first one. The story is that he was chased out onto Hillcrest Avenue by a bunch of Aggies trying to kidnap him (they couldn't corral him) and he was hit by a car and killed.

I'm a current student with hardly any time... but more than enough to trash the "student journalists." I know several people who write for the paper, and they find that 'opinion' revolting. Those people are the 'student journalists', not the morons who wrote that 'opinion'.Originally posted by BillBored:
You also don't have to be a bunch of middle-aged arm chair quarterbacks who obviously have too much time on their hands if they can devote an afternoon to trashing student journalists and the DC.

It's also not as if the people who work at the DC (and I had friends who did) are the only people at SMU that work hard and spend a lot of time at what they do. They chose to work at an organization that will be read by students, and alumni every day that it is printed. They chose to work for/with an organization where everyone with any thought at all will be able to crtique, and form opinions about what they say. That is the reality of a newspaper, if they aren't mature to handle that then they shouldn't be working for the paper, they should just walk away. If they are there to hopefully get some experience to work fulltime in journalism then they need to develop some thicker skin. They wrote their opinion, and now we have the right as Americans to voice ours. So Billbored get your panties out of that twist.

Re: Daily Campus Ed Board
MrMustang1965,
I doubt Ryan Trimble wrote that opinion. He is one of the die-hards for SMU spirit. I know he is a member of the often-attacked cheerleading squad, but don't discount his spirit just because of that.
He always sings Varsity with the band, even when some other cheerleaders are just walking off the field. He always seems pumped about SMU and his articles are always pretty positive. The only ones I read of his this semester were great. One told students what to do on gamedays (tailgate, pep rally at Doak Walker, etc.) and the other article was about the band's new twirler. I wouldn't blame him for this crappy opinion of our beloved mascot. Also, 2 band members write for the DC, and they are balls to the wall spirited, but they didn't write the ed board thing. My point is that while the DC isn't great and the Ed Board ALWAYS sucks, not all the writers necessarily agree with what is published.

Re: Daily Campus Ed Board
The fact that the author suggested putting a student on the horse to "show Florida State how it's done" shows a complete lack of understanding of what our mascot is supposed to be. Nobody "rides" a mustang! That's what makes it a mustang. What a freaking clown. One of my favorite memories of SMU was the first time I saw that pony haul *ss across the field after a score. I thought that was the coolest thing. Peruna needs to go drop a nice loaf on that guy's face.

Re: Daily Campus Ed Board
I always think that it's confusing to have a "live" mascot that is different from the real mascot. But then again, I'd rather not have an incident like what happened at TTU a few years ago with their full-sized horse...
