We all want to see SMU win, right?

The men's soccer team — No. 2 in the country, I gather — is playing Wednesday night on TV.

Fox Soccer Channel.

I called Trinity Hall Irish Pub in Mockingbird Station, and they said they'll have it on. Bring your friends. Let's get a big turnout.

What time?
"He was quoting the Bible, Revelations. 'Behold the pale horse.' The man who 'sat on him was Death... and Hell followed with him.'"

"You tell 'em I'm coming... and hell's coming with me!"

OH HELL YES!

Great performance by the guys tonight. Oliva's goal was brilliant, and Guarda's was very close. Sandbo was sensational between the pipes.

Congratulations to Coach Hyndman and the Mustangs!

Glad you were wrong!

Here's the official write-up:

SMU Men's Soccer Knocks Off South Carolina On Road
Oliva, Guarda notch goals in 2-1 win

Oct. 24, 2007

Columbia, S.C. (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the nation in the newest Soccer America magazine poll, took a huge step toward the Conference USA regular-season title with a 2-1 win Wednesday night over South Carolina in a game that was broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.

The Mustangs improved to 10-2-2, and 5-0-1 in Conference USA games. The Gamecocks slipped to 9-5-1, and 2-1-1 in C-USA games. The Mustangs now hold a 5-3-1 all-time advantage over South Carolina.

In slippery rain-soaked conditions, before a crowd of 877, the Mustangs and Gamecocks battled to a scoreless tie at halftime. But the Ponies got on the scoreboard early in the second half. Junior midfielder Jeff Harwell lifted a 35-yard lead pass toward the goal in the 48th minute, which junior forward Richard Oliva collected and fired across the goal into the lower left corner of the net.

SMU got what proved to be the eventual game-winner in the 81st minute when sophomore forward Dane Saintus dribbled into the left corner, dropped the ball back to junior defender Daniel Lopez, who then crossed the ball to the middle of the field. Junior midfielder Bruno Guarda settled the ball in the box and flicked a shot off the outside of his right foot past USC goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer - who entered the game with a conference-leading goals-against average of 0.92 - to give SMU a 2-0 lead.

USC scored on a Jeff Scannella penalty kick in the 89th minute, but SMU dominated the game, outshooting South Carolina, 20-4.

The Mustangs now return home to face Memphis at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27. For a complete schedule and for ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com.

It's even funnier that they held some sort of a ceremony at halftime to honor their coach on national TV .... and SMU RUINED IT BY WINNING THE GAME.

Glad the Mustangs brought some rain to the parched east coast. The game with Memphis will be huge. We're only a half game in front of Tulsa in the CUSA standings. Wins over Memphis and Kentucky get us into the NCAA tournament without having to win the CUSA tournament since we'd finish a half game ahead of Tulsa (which also hasn't lost, but has 2 ties).

Without having to WIN the CUSA tournament? With the team's record and reputation, SMU probably could lose the first round of the conference tournament and still get in. Might not host as many rounds, but we're getting in. What's important now is continuing to win, to host games all the way up to College Cup (final four).

Need a big crowd Saturday night at Westcott Field.

Watch the football team pull the upset on TV, and then get out and support the Ponies. Noise matters, and attendance matters.

More than anything, WINNING matters. GO PONIES!

It's a Title IX thing...most SEC schools don't have mens' soccer teams. SC and KY were looking for a home
