....Twenty-seven years ago tonight Ron Meyer├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├óΓÇ₧┬ós Mustangs came to Austin to play the #2 ranked Longhorns and kicked their tails with the birth of the Pony Express and Lance Mclhenny. On ESPN I might add with Keith Jackson calling the game.

That was a banner day. "SMU Lances Texas" was the sports page headline that Sunday.

Was there even such a thing as ESPN back then? I thought the game was on ABC.

From what I understand Keith Jackson and Bud Wilkinson did the game for ESPN. I could be wrong, but that is what my sources say. You have to understand that the Mustangs came into the game with a two game losing streak (lost to UH and Baylor), so ABC might not have cared so much about showing a #2 powerhouse play the Ponies.

except the game was a day game. 27 years ago to the moment-domination was sinking into the Shorthorns

It was a day game. 2:00 kickoff. 50 yard line seats in the blue haired alumni section. Could not have been happier until I got home and found my house broken into and vandalized by some local neighborhood punks. Amazing how much it still did not hurt though.

By the way, for you youngsters, in those days ESPN only broadcast one game a week and then replayed it a gazillion times until the following Saturday. I watched every one of them at all hours of the day and night.

the game 2 years later was televised by ABC with Keith Jackson and I believe Frank Broyles

We actually had a good amount of fans travel to this game. I still remember going to Taylor, Texas after the game to eat BBQ and hearing a UT fan say "I can't get away from them there everywhere". He was refering to Mustang fans as we all had on SMU shirts and hats. What a great game and the BBQ was awesome.

Did you actually eat in Taylor or did you swing over to Copeland. Yummmmmm!!!

I think that was the one with the Miracle Man's look-what-I-found TD catch.

I don't think we had cable yet in 1980, so I must have listened on radio. I remember hearing the game live.

We ate in Taylor. From what I remember of Taylor they have a BBQ place, bank and a church. Could have had something else as we were drinkng a lot. Sure would like to have that feeling again after a big Mustang victory.

I think you were in Copeland. Taylor, although having never been confused with a big city had at least the look of a town. It was very similar to Round Rock in those days. Copeland was as you described. Looked like an old western town and you expected a gun fight in the street. BBQ was served family style. A big plate of ribs, brisket and sausage and a giant bowl of potato salad to pass around. I do not have any idea if the place or the town still exist, but it was known only for its BBQ and the only reason it had a bank was for the BBQ restaurant deposits.

You could have been in Taylor, however. They at least did have a couple of good BBQ places as I recall.
