....Twenty-seven years ago tonight Ron Meyer’s Mustangs came to Austin to play the #2 ranked Longhorns and kicked their tails with the birth of the Pony Express and Lance Mclhenny. On ESPN I might add with Keith Jackson calling the game.

Has it been on ESPN Classic? Today would have been a day to run it.

Coupland, which is south of Taylor, has one of the oldest dance halls in Texas. If you were in Taylor your probably ate at Louie Mueller's BBQ. Great BBQ place downtown.

If you were traveling back to Dallas from Austin and stayed on I-35, you might have been in the big town of Walburg. The Walburg Mercantile is a great restaurant that has been there forever.

We were 20 point underdogs that day. It was a great day to be a Mustang. I can still see Craig James running down the sideline for a TD.

I have the game from 82 on VHS tape. I show it to my children from time to time so they will know that we have not always sucked at football.

I have it also. I haven't played mine in a long time so hope that the tape is still salvagable. It is my understanding that those tapes degrade over time. You might want to convert it to a DVD.

The good old days....Sophomore at SMU...partied on 6th Street after the game...If I remember correctly, it was Bevo's birthday...Peruna was in attendance to help him celebrate.

Several great things happened that day. Our victory....and it was Bevo's birthday. The silver spurs had a cake made of hay. Wally Pryor, the TX PA guy asked the crowd to sing happy birthday to that stupid cow. He then said Bevo would like to invite Peruna to eat some his B-day cake. The handlers took Peruna over there. Peruna took one sniff, turn his head, and led the handlers away...Did I laugh!!!! Then at the end of the game all 10K SMU fans sang Happy B-day to Bevo again. The orangebloods just stood there in sorrow and sadness...Oh those were the days!

I think that was McIlheney's first game as a starter. I remember I didn't even set my alarm that Friday night. Figured if I woke up in time I'd drive down to Austin and if not I would just stay home and mow the yard. Thank God I woke up early. I don't think I've ever enjoyed being at a game more. Wasn't that like the first time we beat them in 20 years or some such nonsense?

I listened to the game on RADIO way up here in Arkansas! I still remember how excited I was on James first two runs right up the middle for 20 yrds (or thereabouts..I have the video also..need to check that) on his first two runs.

It WAS lance's foirst start and I remember Meyer standing with me in the Little Rock airport right after he signed Lance, saying he would probably play him as a defensive back as he was not that good of a quarterback.

Now I have the 1982 game on video, does someone have the 1980 game? I would love to get a copy of that.

The 1980 game was Lance's first game. The 1982 game was the Jitter Field's "deflection" to Bobby Leach for a TD.
