Tick Tock Tick TockThat is the clock ticking down on PB's career at SMU...
A look at SMU's Fraud of a Football Program over the past 20 years... Here is each HC's record against Division 1-A schools (I have excluded non Divison 1-A victories) Won - Loss Record FGregg 1-19 TRossley 14-48-3 MCavan 21-34 PBennett 17-47 Winning Percentage FGregg 105 out of 106 schools TRossley 104 out of 111 schools MCavan 88 out of 117 schools PBennett 108 out of 119 schools Victories over teams with winning records FGregg 0 TRossley 1 MCavan 5* PBennett 3 One of Cavan's victories was against a 8-4 Rice team that won 4 games against teams with a combined 1-42 record. Revealing Fact 17 of SMU's wins over the past 20 years, or approximately one third, have come against opponents with a combined W-L record of 25-167-1 PONY UP!
You put me to shame-I especially like the 1-42 stat about that damn Rice team which sucked but I had to listen to all the Slide Rule Cheerleaders talk about what a great football program Rice had. And you prove beyond a Shadow of a doubt that Mike Cavan was the Greatest Supreme Ruler and Master in the Modern Epoch of the Mustang Apocalyse. What's ya think about that BigDaddy? Po Big Daddy-he's trying to make the same Devil's Advocate argument as I did with Cavan except he has less rope(evidence Big Daddy) and the fact is that he actually believes what he is saying about Bennett-I was just trying to [deleted] everybody off so they'd see the BIG PICTURE.
Stallion, just curious, would you be completely satisfied if a solid "name" coach was hired with the stipulation from the admin that SMU's recruiting ability and admissions standards be on par with TCU (within 2 years)?
Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
BIG PICTURE? The only argument I have tried to make and will continue to make is that loosing is as contagious as winning and you have the virus full blown. PB is only a symptom of what is really going on here on the hilltop, and so were the other HC's. The problem you have is understanding that at some point you must attack the virus not the symptoms. You know, cough due to cold. You can treat the cough, but at some point you must address the cold. And for the sake of it, I do not know PB or any of the other HC's, I am just a 35 year SMU FAN, and sick of the smoke screen [deleted].
Seriously, I'm less concerned about the "name Coach" than most. I think that's just about the only excuse the Cheerleaders have-so they use it relentlessly. I've no problem trying to get the most qualified coach in here-and quite frankly there are some intriquing "name coaches" this year like Bowden, Glen Mason, even Franchione-but these guys could be gone quickly and then you might be looking at real retreads. I've spotlighted young, assistant coaches in the past who I think might be just as good like Graham(before Rice and Tulsa), Gibbs(although he fits both categories) and Turner Gill(who I think might be able to outrecruit all the above in the Metroplex). If you could pay a good salary for top quality assistants I believe Todd Dodge would be an interesting coach too-he ain't getting it done with a bunch of high school assistants though like he has now. But No its not just the head Coach. The next time SMU has a quality football team-and I don't mean an average 7-5 team beating a schedule of pillowcases you will see a roster filled with players which will include JUCOs, Division 1A transfers, Prep players, 1 year community college types who got eligible under Division 1A minimum qualification standards, late qualifiers, and quality freshman recruits who had a number of different options on where to play college football.
Orsini ought to take stallions list of the various player sources, and go down the list and make sure all of them can get into SMU by front door or back door, whether the faculty senate likes it or not. He will need an determined Pres Turner to have his back and shout down the whiners. That is the only way we wont be having this same converstion 6 yrs from now.
SMU doesn't have half a sack, thats why the powers that be would never hire Turner Gill. Should have hired Gill last time quite honestly, but SMU went with what it thought was a safe choice. The only way SMU breaks out of the bullcrap it has been putting us through is to take a chance and roll some dice with some upside.
It would be a gamble. And I'm not saying he's my Number 1 choice right now-but I just think the guy would do a fabulous job in recruiting North Texas. SMU would have to give him the resources to hire top notch coordinators and assistants too. Heck there is a decent chance that Turner Gill in the next head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. A lot depends on whether he can continue to show improvement in that "conference" this year. Let's see how Gill finishes the season-but keep an eye on him.
That aint happening here. There are no TOP QUALITY coaches willing to take a chance at this school, unless they are the Bowden/Fran type who do stupid [deleted] and can't win with PLAYERS. And please do not bring in some snotty nose HS coach. I just hope Orsini has something up his sleeve, but obviously coming here was just to pad his resume, just like Doh. First good job back to a real athletic school and Doh will be gone? This program is borderline defunct, and the history is too well known across the entire country. Hind site tells me that one of the worse things we did this year was to have nine televised games. Every game revisited the saga.
Assuming Bennett gets fired-who would you nominate. One of the key attractions of Gill is that I think he could make Willis into a great College QB-have you ever checked on the number of great college QBs Gill developed at Nebraska? All-Americans, Heisman Trophy winner. You might be right about the hesitancy of top Coaches considering SMU which I have pointed out-so I'm thinking ahead in case of that scenario.
During the height of Nebraska football in the 1990s, with Gill serving as quarterbacks coach, the Cornhuskers had unprecedented success at both the quarterback position and as a team. Gill - rated one of the top ten recruiters in the nation in 2000 and 2001 by ESPN.com - played a vital role in Nebraska's three national titles, and mentored a string of record-breaking quarterbacks, from Tommie Frazier to Jamaal Lord to 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch. Crouch, Frazier and Lord rank as the top three total career offense leaders in Nebraska history (while Gill, himself, ranks eighth). Crouch won the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award (top player in the nation) and the Davey O'Brien Award (nation's top quarterback) as well as being a first-team All-American in 2001 under Gill's tutelage. Frazier was also a first-team All-American, Johnny Unitas Award winner and Heisman Trophy finalist in 1995, and led Nebraska to back-to-back national championships (1994-95). Both Fraizer and Crouch were tabbed as Big 12 Offensive Players of the Year. Gill also mentored a pair of Big 12 Conference Offensive Newcomers of the Year in Frazier and Scott Frost (1996). Frost would lead Nebraska to another national title in 1997.

Gill also wants to be a great college coach. That would be ruined at SMU, plus he is black. Aint happening on the hilltop. Coaching is a fraternity and Orsini had his man in place when he got here. I believe Doh was at ND possibly when Orsini was there? I believe PB plays out his contract and then the move will be made. It is hard for me to believe that Turner and the board of regents want to pay PB for doing nothing, like some of you think they are doing now.
well put your seat belt on and get plenty of alcoholic beverages ready because you may be in for a bumpy ride. I too believe that Orsini knew exactly what he was saying when he said that he would not comment on Bennett until SMU was mathematically eliminated from bowl consideration. The train may leave the station by about 6:00 tonite. I'm not saying this for shock value like some on here that blame Bennett for every loss-I'm saying it because as a seasoned viewer of SMU Football-it could not be more obvious. He's gone and soon the next time SMU loses. That's just the way it is.
There is no doubt that all of our past coaches have been handicapped in their recruiting. Cavan had the luxury his first year of having Rossley's Seniors and Juniors who were recruited when we were still in the SWC. As those players graduated and he had to rely on his own recruits garnered while we were in the WAC, his win/loss record began it's slide. Today, we have to recruit into C-USA with the stench of 18 years of SMU losing hanging in the air. It ain't easy for anyone to fight that battle. Our only hope is to come up with a HC with enough celebrity that quality recruits will want to play for him even if it is in C-USA and for a previously perennial loser team....IMHO.

OK that made be laugh. A+. After all SMU couldn't take the cruise in-land to Tulsa. Any reports of Indians or outlaws in Oklahoma Territory? Did someone remember to check the rails? Someone did remember to check the rails didn't they? Anyone?
