Officiating One's Alma Mater?

Post by Stallion »

I'm not complaining about any replay calls-off the top of my head I can't think of any controversial replay calls yesterday. But I found it interesting that the NCAA doesn't appear to have any conflict of interest rules that would prohibit an official from calling his own school's games. Does former Mustang Freeman Johns who I know is an NCAA official call SMU games. I don't know

Eye in the sky: Jenks basketball coach Clay Martin has come a long way in his alternate career as a football official. Two years ago, he was working pee wee games along with high school assignments.

Now, he's in the replay booth for Conference USA games. He was part of C-USA's three-man crew Saturday as the Hurricane hosted SMU. He's also officiated two games for the conference.

Martin started working as a linesman two years ago, handling every level from high school to mighty mites. He joined Tulsa-area veteran referee Don Thomas' crew last year.

"At first, (officiating) was a way to make a little extra money, but it's grown into something I love," said Martin, a former Nathan Hale standout athlete who played a year of football at TU.

The only call that made me mad yesterday was the "roughing the punter" call early in the game where one of our players got tripped or something and ended up underneath the punter. At most it should have been running into the punter.

You have to love the ticket guys...

"This officiating crew is just plain awful..."

There was a run of 2-3 minutes where they seemed to struggle quite a bit, starting with the sweet roughing the kicker call

That is funny since the only call I questioned was why the touchdown to Givens when he backed into the pylon was allowed to "stand" rather than being "confirmed". It was an obvious touchdown showing his heel hit the pylon dead on, and should have been announced as confirmed. I wonder if there was some debate going on in the pressbox.
