mason also has a guy he recruited named marion barber that is a bad mofo in the dallas area
He also Laurence Maroney who is with the New England Patriots.

It's a little bit of both. 1. Mason never really was a great recruiter (in terms of pulling in highly recruited people). Most of the people that ended up very good at MN were either academic risks or unheralded out of HS. 2. There was a complete shift of offensive scheme. From the zone blocking and run run run of Mason to the spread attack. 3. The two-deep has 10 seniors listed on it and only 9 juniors. 3 players were kicked off the team during fall practice for a sexual assault 2 were defensive starters (incl. best secondary player).
So it is a little bit of a new coach (who has never been a head coach or coordinator) and scheme and his wanting to play his players (he still had time to recruit the incoming freshman and a handful start). And it is also attrition and lack of a remaining upperclass at the school.
Since SMU can't take academic risks and with Mason's recruiting as suspect, I would think those would be two big negatives in the eyes of a hiring committee.
