Would Mike Shula be someone of interest for SMU?

does Mike Shula not fit the "Matt Doherty Orsini Model"?
huge program thought enough of them to hire them
both were on short term hot seats at huge programs
both fired after some success and some failure?

We need someone fired for reasons other than on-field failure. Chasing sorority chicks, a la Bowden or Schnellenberger, no problem. Fudged that resume, a la O'Leary? Grab an eraser and send it in again. Too many interesing hotel charges, a la Price? You can't get into too much trouble at the Doubletree, so come on in and let's talk.

Agreed, we have been asking for a second chance for 20+ years now. I think we need to give someone a second chance as well. Rick Neuheisel, Gary Barnett, Terry Bowden, George O'Leary, Mike Price, etc. Choose the winningest of the bunch with the fewest moral transgressions!

Actually, Shula fits the Doherty model quite well, since his main failing (like everyone except current Bama coach Saban) was not being the legendary Bear Bryant.

But again, I say Solich, who was fired for not being the legendary Tom Osbourne after a 10-3 year, is an even better choice in that same mold.

I have witness 6 years of a Shula like team at SMU. Shula, at one of the most successful programs with loads of talent and no difficulties in recruiting, couldnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t teach his teams how to finish a win.

If either Bennett or Shula could teach a team how to finish a win, that killer instinct that teams need to win in the later part of the fourth quarter, then neither would be looking for new employment.

Since I want a SMU team that wins and doesnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t blow leads in the fourth quarter, I want a coach that teaches that killer instinct that teams need to finish a win. Shula has proven with all the assets that an Alabama can bestow upon him, that he cannot teach a team how to win.

Therefore, I have no interest whatsoever in hiring a Bennett clone that canÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t teach a team to finish a game and win.

Shula was not a good game coach and he had a fair amount of talent. Would scare me to think what he could do with a team that does not have talent.

Doherty by his admission did not handle his position in a manner conducive to winning. He was let go, he sought help, he learned, he waited, he came back, and thus far is handling himself very well although no answers have had time to be obtained.

Shula on the other hand was around big time head coaching from the day he was born and was unable to drive the course even when provided the keys to a Mercedes.

I'm not sure Shula would be my first choice, but
in my opinion he would at least be "someone of interest" for SMU.

I think Mike Shula's situation is in
fact very similiar to Matt Doherty.

Sure he's no Jimmy Johnson, but he did coach
Alabama to a 10-2 season and Alabama under
Mike Shula finished ranked 8th in the country.

It's not like Shula took over in an ideal Alabama situation.
He took over the proud but troubled program
less than four months before the 2003 season
after Mike Price was fired following spring practice
for his off-the-field behavior. Shula also had to deal
with an Alabama under NCAA sanctions.

I think Mike Shula is worth an interview because we
won't be interviewing Jimmy Johnson, Steve Spurrier,
Urban Myer, Bob Stoops, or Jim Tressel.
