The guy couldn't get a guarantee that his job was safe, and he walked out on his team midway through the year. Talk about taking your ball and going home.....
As he becomes more of a candidate, maybe we can break out some of the other rumors about him and his departure.

I'd take Bowden in a heartbeat. Are you kidding me?
Auburn shouldn't have jacked with an undefeated coach.

I just get the sense he wants more than a SMU . . . sounds like he wants back in the SEC, maybe to stick it to Auburn a few times!!!
Sports, and all that implies.

Anbody who gets SMU back in the top 10 will get more kudos than taking over an overstocked, long-time winner in the SEC.
That's the challenge.

Rumors don't need to be spread. Let's stick with facts.

He needs to do penance at a school like SMU before he goes back to the show. Heck, he coached at Samford for goodness sakes. I get the feeling that he may have been blackballed in the SEC. His commentating has gone on much too long. Obviously, the first SEC (or Fla. State) program that winked at him, he'd be gone. But he may realize that he needs to get a job in coaching before he becomes an afterthought.

It was an ego thing and I'm sure something he learned from. He had a falling out with some of the more powerful boosters and wanted to quit rather than give them the satisfaction of firing him. Auburn boosters are the same group that flew Bobby Petrino to meet with them while Tuberville was still their head coach.

they will get more than Kudos . . . they will get whatever job they want!!! including NFL!!! if a coach got us back into the top 10, that is like asking Stanford to beat USC at the Coliseum!!!(oh, wait) Come on!!!
How about just getting SMU back to a bowl game (for starters) then we can talk a national ranking . . . then top 10!!
the next coach gets us to a bowl game and i say he gets a Snickers, not a lousey Kudos!
Sports, and all that implies.

TOP 10???
Anyone who can put SMU footbal back on the map will get tons of attention from the "big boys". If the next coach comes in and wins right away, we will be hearing from some about how he did it "with Bennett's recruits", while others would have us believe, will be nothing short of a miracle.

Man...if he could do it with Bennett's recruits I would be estatic. I certainly wouldn't look at that as a negative unless his record went south when his recruits came in, which should not be the case.
