The problem I have with a coordinator is that they do not have a staff in place, and other than the obvious need for a recruiter, the team will only be as good as the staff that he can assemble. The same would be true with any coach that has been inactive. I would lean strongly towards an active D-1 head coach if we can find one willing, and that leans towards Gill in my mind.
The one thing that a Bowden, Mason, or Rick with a P Neuheisel brings is the ability to build a quality staff in a hurry. That may bery well have been PB's biggest failing in that he never had a special teams coach, never had a real OC until Burns was forced upon him, and hired his brother as a coach. Guys like Bowden will show up with coaches that have been there, done that, and gotten the trophy before.

Applewhite would not take our job. He turned down the Rice job.
If he wants to be a HC at a major university, he'll do that easier by being Saban's OC for a few years, than by taking our job. "Remember Danny - Two wrongs don't make a right but three rights make a left."
Or maybe Paul Johnson as the great Kate suggested in her article.
the great Paul Johnson just gave up 59 to a Division 1-AA team and lost to them for the second time in recent years. Runs the wrong offense-has no Texas recruiting ties whatsoever. You can get away with that in BB-but in FB it is a big strike against him.
AMEN ![]() Bennett was a great D-coordinator at KState but it just didn't translate.
How many did Michigan give up to App. State? Delaware is in their division top 20 so they were no slouch. Johnson is not a defensive coach and if you watch the way he runs his offense it is very creative. Could it work here-who knows but with a limited O-line we seem to always have that type of offense would stand a better chance then the spread. I admit I am not a fan of that type of offense but it has shown to have its place when well coached-
All I know is I am not a fan of the style offense we run now . . . with a good QB and IMO 2 good RB's there has got to be a better way to take advantage of that. Run Martin straight ahead for crying out loud! the man is 225!!!! not 185!!!
Sports, and all that implies.
If we hired Applewhite, would every story written/aired about SMU count towards the BELO Corps Texas Longhorn quota?

Who's your source that he was offered the Rice job? I heard he had an LSU and Alabama offer but sources close to the situation (relatives) never said he was offered the Rice HC job.
I remember some speculation in the Chronicle but I never heard anything confirmed.
I have to agree. Did anyone watch UCF last night? Lining up in the I with QB under center and playing smash mouth football. Maybe one of the reasons we appear "soft" up front is that the spread doesn't allow our guys to put their hands on the ground and just fire out and hit someone. I just hope before their eligibility runs that we will see McKinney leading Martin on some short yardage situations. Don't eliminate the spread, but use it along with the I formation. I'm sick and tired of watching Martin tip-toeing east-west. That's for the little quick scat backs.
Martin needs to run north south and he needs to do it enough times to get into a rhythm. He seems to have a hard time changing direction 90 degrees. Once he gets going east west, he seldom is able to get his body going north south. Of course it would help if someone could hold that hole in the line open a little longer.
I agree here... I keep seeing - on this board - that he turned down the job. But I don't recall that at all, and found no evidence to support it. In fact he took the 'Bama job the day before Graham split to Tulsa. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
