An outsider invades on SMU's behalf

As a proud alumnus of SMU and perhaps the only living person left without his own sports talk show, allow me to jump outside of the NBA box and vent about the SMU football program.

This is a turning point (again) for the school. The Mustangs have been terrible for too long. They have a great city to draw to and a string of nightspots on Greenville Avenue that still makes college life (and post-college life) exciting.

Why, oh why, can't they recruit?

The answer, of course, is that they have had the wrong people doing the recruiting. Yes, there have been some keepers. Justin Willis and James Mapps are good players. But you need more than that. And with the overpopulation of good high school players in the Metroplex, how can you not fortify the roster with local ties?

This coaching hire is important to anybody in the SMU family. There are those of us who went to school there during the glory years _ yes, the gory years, too, that led to the death penalty. But we're back and ready to Pony Up with season tickets next season. But only if we see reason for hope.

There's nothing I'd rather do than give up my Houston Texans season tickets for $1,000 per season and donate to the Hilltop. But they have to give me a reason.

Hire Major Applewhite. Or Terry Bowden. Or somebody with a proven track record or an up and comer that has ''can't miss'' written on him. Then pay him to keep him.

The school did a wonderful thing getting an early start on this process. Just don't mess it up.
