Possible coach: Terry Bowden

Postby Billy Joe » Tue Oct 30, 2007 2:46 pm

I would like to start various threads about the possible coaching canidates in which only serious replies about the advantages and disadvantages of each canditate are discussed. I thought I would start with a name everyone knows: Terry Bowden.

Advantages: household name, football family, coaching connections (could possibly put together a great staff), won at a big time program.

Disadvantages: out of coaching a long time, what are his offensive plans (power I? would that work at SMU w/out really big offensive linemen, etc.), does he have Texas ties? can he recruit to SMU? Is he committed staying at SMU or would he take the first train out of here if he won or if things didn't go as planned?

it may be helpful also when discussing the possible coaching
candidates to always remember...."compared to who"?

its not like bob stoops will be flying in for an interview
we will have to accept some negatives from whoever we hire
hopefully the new coach can take us a few more steps
coach phil got us close to a big step last year
thats probably as far as he could take us
we now need to move along the food chain
to where we are winning 7-9 games a year on a regular basis
and then move up from there.
i think Bowden would be a big step for SMU
yeah if he does well he could leave for FSU
when his Dad retires
but that would be a good problem to have
to have the SMU coach leaving to take over
a huge program that would mean we are doing very well
it's kinda like marrying a beautiful girl
with that comes alot of attention
yeah we could hire somebody nobody will ever look at
but is that really what we want?
there are several exciting names out there
if it's Bowden I would be thrilled
but whoever it is I bet Orsini picks a good one

after watching orsini yesterday
i just hope we can hold on to him for a few years
that guy is going to "getter done"!

Bowden would be a great hire for smu for thefollowing reasons:

name recognition
coaching bloodline
HC before (with great success)
great x an o guy

if our biggest concern is that he'll bolt when we win, that is a problem i'd like to have! plus, that has happened to TCU (FRAN), Tulsa (Kragthorpe), etc...and they have fared well!

Slick Rick has few friends among the Texas High School football coaches.

They don't like his fare-haired approach. They want to deal with a grounded guy. Bennett was that but he fell off the trail over the last 3 years.
