Coaches "Afraid" of The SMU Job

I know the ticket and others have said that many coaches would be afraid of coming to SMU because it is, in their opinion, a coaching graveyard.

Have these people ever met a division 1-A college football coach? The good ones are the most competitive, cocky, driven people you could ever meet. Do you think a Terry Bowden or any coach worth a damn says to himself, Mike Cavan, Tom Rossley, and Phil Bennet could not win there, therefore, I can't? They are the exact opposite. They love challenges and are cocky enough to think they can do anything. That is the mind frame of a college football coach.

No but the good ones-the ones with options-are going to want to find the best situation to be successful-they are going to want to see tangible evidence of the Commitment of the administration of the university. As Phil Bennett says grad rates don't mean a "rats-ass"- Coaches are judged on winning and losing-and Coaches want to be at a school that gives them the best chance to win. That being said a lot of Coaches w/o a job or options would like a multi-year multi million dollar contract

That is not the graveyard they are referring to Dwan. It is more about the support of the program, it is dead. You have to be a miracle worker, and why try at SMU when you can go elsewhere and prove yourself?

all very true. I guess my point is that I think all the names that have been mentioned so far would think that they are better than the coaches we have had in the past. Granted there is more than just coaching that has held us back in the past. And of course, anybody with options would probably take a job that is less daunting.

"Less than 24 hours into the search for SMU's next football coach, athletic director Steve Orsini's assistant had to recharge his cell phone because of the high number of phone calls.

It was a good sign for a man who is embarking on what will be the signature hire of his tenure: a new football coach."

How many calls/phone messages per cell phone battery? I had a friend one time that called me 37x repeatedly and left long messages because I wouldn't answer my phone. it died but it started out about half drained already....so what's that...80 plus/minus 15 calls on Orsini's assistant's phone in one morning...pretty darn good. Craig James said somewhere that he was getting a lot of text messages from interested people...I can't remember where I read that...some link on here.

We can get a good coach here. Good recruiting base, tradition, better than average facilities, and a good enough conference to crash the BCS with a really good season.

Houston Nutt had the swine on the brink of the national title hunt and now fans are trying to run him off? Bowden was awesome for Auburn. Davies coached at Notre Dame. Any of these guys would be great here.

Coaches are just people - nothing more or less. They respond when you pay them. We have upped the package. We have lots of candidates.

I'm just sure all those former Div 1 Head Coaches out there are "afraid" of signing a Multi Million Dollar contract with SMU. :lol:

...Are you kidding ? Anyone out there who states that is either completely out of it or wants to continue to see SMU stay down. Just like you in your field, everybody is interested in opportiunity and big money in their line of business...

the fact that we have only a core group of 1500 fans who buy season tickets and attend all our games didn't deter Matt Doherty from accepting the SMU challenge. I think Orsini will be able to attract plenty of capable candidates. The question remains whether SMU will make a true commitment to being competitive, but it remains a challenge for a small private school to compete with the larger state schools in terms of the academic cirriculum we can offer.

Think we'll ever see that "athletic coaching" program that WVU is offering?

For the coach who understands the history and the value of our university's reputation, Dallas and campus, this could the be perfect. I have argue that continually chasing bigger schools and money, raises expectations with every move and ultimately the Peter's Principle hits, even when it is something not under their control.

SMU is and should be sold as a destination job for the right guy. Orsini can sell it and then the coach sells it, especially to the students (who need it desparately), Dallas market, alums and, more importantly, recruits.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
