Coaching mattersAnd you can establish a winning program at traditional coaching graveyards if your coach recognizes ways to coach around a school's limitations: 1. play smart and disciplined; 2. implement a blanket redshirt program; 3. implement a system that doesn't require 3-4 star recruits to be successful in the initial stages of rebuilding; and 4. play hard and make the other team beat you, don't beat yourself.
Read this story about Wake Forest[http://www.wral.com/sports/blogpost/1983220/] Wake is a school where football has always been an afterthought. Wake has about 4200 undergrads and tough academic standards for its athletes. It also has high graduation rates. Sound familiar? If it can be done there, it can be done here. We just need the right guy leading the charge[/url]
I will say having a son play on the team they are not tht strict. The boys live all over dallas, no curfew girlfriends can stay as long as they like 2 days or 2 weeks, no meal plan if you are not living in the dorm, moore hall is considerded and apartment so no meal plan which is eat whatever I have in the fridge or fast food or pizza....no nutritionist, so basically its like a job. The team is NOT a team they are all in clicks like high school the upper classmen don't even bother to get too know the underclassmen and the players are all about self. This is not a team...they need to re-evaluate the whole situation. I have a nephew tht plays for OU and tht program is severe and it is mandatory that the team live in the same place even off campus and they have mandatory breakfast, and dinner everyday even in the summer and mandatory workouts in the summer. They enforce curfew...Stoops is hard but he is fair on those boys....not sure about SMU....these are young men developing into Adults...they need lots of structure not apartments and distrations....they should be eating sleeping and shi$ing football instead of movies and video games the films should be running........Just my thoughts as a hard but fair Football Mama...
That's what I like about Nutt, he's alot like Stoops. I clean my gun and think of Galveston.
Didn't Pye eliminate the athletic dorms after the DP?
"It'd be nice to see Jesse Henderson break one here."
And tht was the biggest mistake....and now we are building a dayum library and need to be building campus housing apartments....OU has Apartments tht are 4 players to an apartment very nice setup and the whole team lives in the same area and the boys tht dont have cars coach makes the upper classmen responsible for them and the first year he doesnt really want them to have a car....geezzz...let's implement some discipline to this program. AND FEEED THESE KIDS FOOD.
never heard of discipline as a problem with this staff! they do need some sort of training table I think ncaa banned that to but other schools figure a way around that!

I agree with the training table but athletic dorms proved to be worse for discipline than housing with the "normal" students. Putting all the athletes together in one building was always a recipe for disaster. I noticed a comparison to how OU does their housing. This is a University well known for disciplinary problems. I remember as far back as the 60's when Llyod Phillips, All American at Arkansas entered their athletic dorm and shot the lights out of the hallway. The kids tend to get a little move rambuncious when they are all together.
When I was at SMU we were all required to live on campus with the other students unless we were married and then in campus provided married housing units. But again, if allowed, a training table should be high on the list of things to have.
They now have implemented a training table the boys will know today if this will come out of there stipend...as for the housing I still think something is wrong with the boys living off campus and not having curfews and the freedom tht they have...I was raised in the military and it just seems like a good way to go....the accountablility for the team as a whole and not just individuals you get along with...this is a team...that's all I am saying.
I wholly agree with you on the housing. You will note in my post that we were required to live on campus. I just do not think the separate athletic dorm is a good idea having seen results with and without. Let them live with the regular students. This also helps build some closeness between the players and the students that would help in getting more peole to the games.
your right....and thts a whole other thread within itself...the players and the students....geeeezzzzz ![]()
The discipline I was referring to at Wake Forest was on field discipline - not making stupid penalties, not fumbling, not missing open field tackles, making big plays on special teams and forcing turnovers. Go watch a Highland Park game and see how they dominate physically superior teams - with brains and discipline. Watch Navy or Air Force or Wake Forest. These are teams that win using brains and effort rather than relying on pure talent. That said, I think off field discipline translates into playing smart football so I like the suggestion of more control of the boys when they aren't practicing or playing.
