Also, Briles played for UH and HOF Coach Bill Yeoman. Where did Randy Allen go to college? He sure wins a lot.

I believe Briles made around $300-400K to start and now makes around $900-$1MM. I believe Dodge makes around $250-300K.

If SMU truly has $1 million to throw around, it will get a very substantial coach. Oh, and I sure doubt Applewhite would go from Alabama OC to head coach at UT. They have the coin to hire the best available HC in the NCAAs. If Major came to SMU and turned it around, then he would be a prime candidate at UT when Mack III retires or gets fired.

There is not truth to this rumor - I assure you. No dig on Allen - he is a great high school coach, but your guy is either wrong or clueless or both.

Randy and I went to SMU together 1968-1972. He was a very good return man. I am impressed with his coaching record and he may become a legend, but in my opinion we need to be going after someone with a strong college coaching background.

I'm just telling you guys what's coming from directly from the D Mag staff room, people who cover the HP/SMU area and people who are paid to be on top of these things and to talk to people in these situations...it's 2nd or at the most 3rd, not 99th-hand information...of course, that doesn't guarantee anything, I just didn't see his name discussed here yet and I thought I'd add it to the mix. The question I asked him specifically was: "Do you know yet who SMU is interested in?" and he told me "Mason, Bowden and Allen is going to be interviewed". Like I said, I'll ask specifically. You guys need to drop the skepticism down one notch. I like skepticism and think it's one of life's single most important skills/mindsets...but you don't have to rattle your sabers at everything said: pick and choose At the very worst I'm just passing along a name being thrown around by the crackpot/know-nothing media. Or it could be a name that is actually drifting around in Orsini's mind and someone nobody here has mentioned before and so I caught everyone up. Now if I had said we'd never landed on the moon...then maybe exactitudes are pertinent.

As we all know, D Magazine has a thriving sports section.

D Magazine comprises a lot more than just the magazine...it also has a lot of the local papers (People) in Dallas under its umbrella.

Like I said, I was just trying to add a name to the mix. If you are hurt because I didn't ask who the primary source was, sorry for causing your injury. My reaction was more, "[Mason] Wow! [Bowden] HE'S interested!?! [Allen] Who? [The coach of HP] He coaches 4A!?!" You guys can continue to turd on the name but this guy has personally interviewed Bennett and Orsini and the rest of SMU football staff I'm sure a lot more than any of us can attest to, so I think it gives the name at least one smidge of credibility or at least he has a pretty good idea of everyone's mindset involved. This isn't coming from a homeless man.

This has got to be a freakin' joke. What a waste of time. SMU needs to be serious about this -- a courtesy interview is a distraction from the matter at hand. Ridiculous.

Whooooo...the Park Cities People says it's so! Wow, what an endorsement from a journalism giant!

Look, whoever you talked to listed the no-brainer candidates. It doesn't take inside information to come up with Mason, Bowden and Randy Allen. The HP coach may be a shock to some, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a courtesy interview. He is an SMU alum, he's right here in SMU's backyard and he's highly successful.

Interviews are a two-way street. Allen can give SMU some perspective as a high school coach. Such as, what SMU needs to do to better connect with high school coaches, if SMU were to hire an outsider (non-Texan) would he be accepted by area coaches? Not that Allen is sitting on a goldmine of talent at HP, but he certainly is connected in HS circles.

If SMU so much as places a phone call to a Texas 4A high school coach about the vacant head coaching position, I am done with SMU football.

Absolutely! I'll go a step further--any lackluster hire.

This wasn't an endorsement of Allen for godsakes, by me or anyone else! I happen to think this would be a terrible idea! I also didn't say this was an amazing development or that People papers was the end-all of current sporting news! I'm also not saying in my head, "he he this is the biggest scoop ever, I'm going to be the first to break it." All I said was that this was one "no-brainer" that wasn't mentioned by any of the "brainers" here on this discussion board and it was dropped by someone who might know something about it because he's talked to all the SMU people who might be involved in the process relatively recently. That's all. Period. Write it is pencil. Write it in quotes. Write it with parentheses after it saying (an idiot said an idiot said this). Whatever. I just wanted to add a name to make our prospective list more complete.
