Anyone think this guy is worth a look? Not sure he's ready to leave coordinating, but he's from Irving, but grew up in Arkansas. Pretty prolific offenses so far.

Don't think he is ready. Would love to have Graham and he together.

Probably not ready but worth a look. Did well at AR and now at TU. Head coach for Mitch Mustain in college. Knows how to coach talent.

He has had only one recruiting season experience (and that was interrupted by a job change). I doubt he has the connections and experience to recruit well. We need someone with strong recruiting capabilities. I do not think Malzahn is worth a look until he proves he can recruit.
I don't want to waste our resources developing another head coach as he learns how to recruit.

If Dwan's post about the Search Committee meeting is accurate, we are only looking for a proven Head Coach. I tend to agree with that criteria. Success as a coordinator doesn't automatically translate to success at the head coach level. Let other schools can take that chance, but not SMU. Not this time. Not with our history. We need a proven commodity - not from Div I-AA, and not from district 10-4A but a successful track record as head coach at a BCS programs. Gus will probably get his chance someday, but not for this job.

im not arguing to hire him, because it wouldnt satisfy the fans, but he is a darn good recruiter. he is the real deal, this just isnt his time

No arguing intended but the only true recruiting he has shown to date is one season at Arkansas where he brought 4 out of 5 HS All everythings from the school where he coached to the school where he went. Then at Tulsa he picked up some transfers that he had recruited while at Arkansas that left programs they were dissatisfied with and wanted out.
I personally think he is a star in the making but if he were made HC at SMU I think he would rapidly develope into a black hole.

Did he add an "a" after Malzahn left? If so, perhaps that extra letter on the back of his jersey is slowing him down.
