The aforementioned board members, including the student trustee, Galloway, probably serve on the Athletics Committee to the Board. There are 8-10 committees that serve the board and perform different reporting functions vis-a-vis university strategy and some tactics. They include (but are not limited to) the following:
Athletics, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Development, Buildings & Grounds, Audit, Finance, and several ad hoc committees each year (this search committee may report to the Board, or it may report to Orsini and/or Turner). Each committee has an administration representative or two, a student representative, and several general Board members. The committees receive reports from a designated individual from the university appropriate to the respective committees. If any items are actionable, votes are taken with simple majority determining outcome. Then the committee chairman reports to the Board as a whole in general session, and there are votes to approve the actions of the committees.
Galloway is going to be individual from whom the highest likelihood of obtaining information exists. I will go on a limb and say if there are quite a few professors on this committee, they will break silence to their faculty senate colleagues if they perceive it is going a way they won't like. But that generally doesn't affect the administration; they can do what they want regardless of the recommendation by the committee. The committee just provides buy-in by the board members as well as a way to cast a wide net for candidates.
Good luck, gentlemen (and ladies, if there is one on the committee). This is an important group of people with an important job. It's time to let them do it.
