Pre-Bennett talent

Postby sickandtired » Mon Oct 06, 2003 1:47 pm

I am so sick of hearing how the talent level was so poor under Rossley and Cavan compared to what is out there now. As a player who played under both coaches and one who never has clamied to be a future hall of famer this is rediculous. I can name you several all-confernce players in the SWC, and the WAC even before the WAC became so crappy. I can name a freshman all american and several guys who are playing or at least got a shot in the NFL. I don't mean to talk down about any of the guys that are playing now it's just I'm tired for all of us who were there during these years getting called "sub-par", "rotund offensive linemen who couldn't move", and so on and so forth. Give me Ramon, Kevin Thornal, Brannon Kidd, Kieth Chiles, Trey Bandy, Austin Adami, Jerry Chavira, Bill Holder, Macarthy, AJ, Donald Mitchell, Jacoby Rhinehart, Craig Swann, Chris Bordano, Chad Patton, Jason Simonton, Rodnick Phillips, Donte Womack, Kelsey Adams and the list goes on and on. Sure, some of these guys are going to be really good but come off the "so much more talent" kick that most of you are on. I'll step off my soap box now and let you people tell me how wrong I am. I look forward to hearing from you.

The defense was terrible under Rossley. Flannigan made the offense work if that's what it can be called. You guys couldn't stop a clock. If you had a defense you would have won some games. Just as if this team had an offense it would win some games. No doubt there were some good players under Rossley but the bottom line is they didn't produce as a team, especially on defense.

...there is no recruiting list, no list of player's making all-conference, no list of NFL draftees and no list of players playing in the NFL that backs up your thesis-sickandtired. The number of SMU players making it to the NFL is particularly embarrassing when compared to other Texas schools. The exceptions you cite are all easily overshadowed by the numbers of our opponents.

Nacho, I'm sure you are very knowledgable about football and love SMU and I'm glad there are people like you but that is ubsurd. If anything our offenses were lacking. I'm not sticking up for Cavan by any means quite frankly I don't like him but under him and Schuman our defense ranked as high as 12th in the country one year and everyear they were a top 25 defense. Offense if anything literally dropped the ball. Responses such as this make me wonder how much of these games people are paying attention to. Wow.

Let me make this clear when I talk about all confernce and guys going pro, I'm talking about any all conference 1st team to honorable mention and the pro's I stated guys made it or at lest go tryouts. As far as lists:(all conference) Brannon Kidd, Kieth Chiles, Kevin Thornal, Alber Johnson, Donald Mitchell(still in the NFL), Jacoby Rhinehart(same) Craig Swann, Chris Bordano, Jason Simonton, Vic Viloria, Rodnic Phillips, Ramon Flanigan, Luke Johnson, Mick Rossley, Chad Patton, Austin Adami, Roy Rios(first year and then fell of the earth) Chris Cunningham(obviously still there). I could keep going. Guys who at least got a try out or are in the NFL: Brannon Kidd, Jason Holz, Rodnic Phillips, John Hampton, Kevin Aldridge, Joey Slaten, Jason Evans, Chris Bordano, Kevin Thornal and others. I'm not comparing SMU to other schools or even saying we are a factory at all, this is completely and SMU and SMU only discussion. Again, I'm not saying the guys back a few years ago were all americans but I think we were better than the football geniuses are giving credit for.

I was talking aqbout Rossley, not Cavan. Go back to my post and see that I specifically mentioned Rossley. Schumann ran a good defense for Cavan.

S&T you are obviously proud of your teammates. I can understand that. My point whether we are talking about Rossley (which I was) or if we are now talking about Cavan or both that the bottom line is winning. Those teams didn't win. That's how teams are judged. Ws and Ls. Tonight Boston will play at Oakland. One will be seen as a winner and the other a loser. Boston with their megapayroll has imo much more to lose. Oakland with their paltry payroll has already exceed my expectations. Back to SMU. We are good fans. My gosh. Look what we have had to put with for 14 years. We still come and cheer all the positive plays. I haven't heard one person boo from the stands in--well I don't think I ever have. We are loyal. I post here in what I hope is in an honest way. To be perfectly honest if I didn't have some persoanl ties to SMU I would cut them lose. It has gotten so painful. I have a fee3ling that in 2 weeks I will be back though cheering once again.

I just have to jump in and disagree with this. If Oakland loses tonight, it will mark the 4th straight year that they were bounced from the first round of the playoffs, and it will be a major disappointment.

OK, back to the topic at hand...

It's going to be a great game--Pedro vs Zito. Boston has copied Oakland's model regarding style of play, but Boston has much more overall talent. In one game you have to go with Boston.

s & t -

Questions I hope you'll answer since you were there.

One, please comment ion the success that Gregg might have had if he could have remained head coach as well as AD, and if he had Rossley as his OC.

Two. Didn't Rossley have a son who came to SMU as a WR? Did he play just one year? Did he get hurt or what?

Yeah, this year was pretty exciting. Couldn't get back to the playoffs so we could get beaten by the Braves again. :pinch:
