My number 1 choice I believe would probably be Todd Graham-but I don't think that's likely. See above. I've talked about a lot of quality Coaches for informative purposes and to counter the "Must Have Bowden Group". Take a look at em all including Bowden. If Bowden got the Job I would have no problem supporting him.

Todd Graham would be another great choice, but like Jimmy Johnson, not a candidate.

Mason actually took his team to more bowls than all of them-9. Barnett took his teams to 7 bowls but his overall record is weighted down by having to turn-around the morbid Northwestern program. Mason turned around 2 morbid programs Kansas and Minnesota so that brought down his record. Bowden had a Rolls-Royce from Day 1- 3 bowls in 6 years plus 20-1-1 in his first 2 years when they were ineligible for a bowl

Are you still on the Mason wagon? I thought I was and have backed off a little. Not sure if it is the low name recognition factor or something else. Just not as excited about him as I was a week ago. Can't explain. Wouldn't be disappointed if we got him though. I just can't get over the big name coaches right now. Somewhere in my brain, I think we really need the name on top of a good coach. I think recruits would respond as well.

That's exactly why the big name is a key factor for me. I think more than x's and o's we need a big name to energize the fan base, national media and recruits.

The other side of that coin is Doherty. He was a big name and we hired him. Have we gotten more attention from the media and fans since he's been here? (We all know he has the attention of recruits)

Is his lack of attention due to the fact that College Football is king in Texas? Does he need to prove himself first? Just a thought...

I think with Doherty, his celebrity will help him with recruiting. Recruiting will help him with winning games. Winning games will help draw more fans. Winning fames, fans in the stands and Doherty on the sidelines will attract media attention (ie more coverage in The Dallas Morning News, more games broadcast on ESPN) improving recruiting his name and the team.

From my observation, recruiting is about catching lightning in a bottle. Take advantage of the newness while you can in order to get the best athletes possible to help you win and then win some games to improve recruiting. If you need time to establish your reputation it makes it more difficult to be successful because recruits start losing faith in your ability to win.

All those guys have established themselves in Texas recruiting except Bowden. Mason and Barnett in particular always stressed Texas recruiting. I think the BIG NAME tthing is way way overrated and more a comfort to alumni. Its the interpersonal connection between players and head coaches and assistant coaches that will win recruiting battles.

Based on that, I think the latest standings in my support for new football coach are:

1) Gary Barnett
2) Terry Bowden

One thing that is interesting about Mason: look at the record of the teams he has coached in the years before after after. They weren't as good before and they weren't as good afterwards. I don't mean the immediate year, I mean several several years before and after. Maybe Brewster bucks that trend, but he is having trouble this year.

Bowden may have more "wow" factor because he's been on tv so much.
