I can't think of many people that I could be less excited about coaching SMU next year.
You have the sickness. It is just hard to get excited about anybody coaching at SMU.

My question. Why would a former head coach who had success in a BCS conference not still be coaching in a BCS conference? And what would make him come to a non-BCS conference. He can get money at some other BCS conference school. There will be openings.
you will have to ask guys like Mike Price or George O'Leary. Obviously the "profile" is not unlike that of Matt Doherty, who "once had the keys to the castle...and blew it". Basically anybody who can come in here and turn this thing around is going to be labeled a coaching genius and will eventually have plenty of opportunities to resume that career at the BCS level. Either that, or the option to stay and become a legend at SMU without the pressure that will come at the BCS level.

As far as the BCS, it will be history in 10 yr.s. Our Tax $ goes to schools that can not compete in the BCS. The Gov, is going to change this mess. Until then, SMU will move to the top of CSA because they have finally decided it's in the best interest of SMU. Then move to a BCS conference. Maybe the Pac. 12 0r 14. About that time te BCS will be gone and a playoff will take it's place in some form.

Whatever...I still trust what I was told. My source had no reason to make it up...he doesn't work in the athletic department...but then it is possible the person he saw just looked like Bowden.

The initial capital required is 3.5 million.... prominant alumni (Hunt, Sewell, ect.) are donating this to buy out Bennet's(and staff) contracts. The school is then willing to spend the mil or more to hire one of these guys. Just for your info...

Per DMN
SMU will fulfill Bennett's contract, which runs through Dec. 2008. Bennett lost an option for his contract to run through 2009 when he didn't win seven games in 2006. He makes almost $500,000 a year. The rest of the coaching staff's contracts won't be renewed after they expire in May.
Nick....how do you get to 3.5M?

Bennet number is about 500k - most of the staff is not on long term contract. Your numer is high by a huge factor.
