Temporary Fan

Postby fbdad » Tue Oct 07, 2003 10:16 am

Stallion has just classified player parents as "..temporary 4 year and out fans." which is demeaning to say the least to all player families. The player families are some of the most enthusiastic fans I've seen at this school. They cheer the team on no matter how bad the score may get, while the drunk alums on the fifty yard line insult the players and coaches. They stay in their seats to the end of the game, joining the band and team, while alums leave at half time [deleted] about their large investment in season tickets. They feel the impact of losses directly through their sons long after the game is over. They feel their sons pain, both mental and physical. They provide the necessary support to help their sons through the rigors of a FIVE year program. They continue to be loyal SMU supporters long after their sons graduate. I'm disappointed in Stallion taking this approach. I'm all for harmless banter and discussion but he's hit below the belt this time.By the way Stallion. I did attend SMU classes and have a home in Dallas which may give me more credibilty in your eyes as if I give a ....

Both of you guys made your points, and I'm sure since you're both here on the site as fans you're among the best of the best. Everybody is expressing frustration, searching of answers and expressing opinions.

fbdad, I'm sure you feel all the pain close and personal.

But also to Stallion's point, a lot of the people on this board went to SMU. A lot of them played football or other sports here. Many have brothers, sisters, moms, dads and granparents who also went here. A lot of people grew up in Mustang baby clothes. So you've got to appreciate his perspective as well.

Good post Peruna..I'm not questioning the loyalty or background of the many on this board,Stallion is.I was just defending the parents which should NOT be necessary.I respect the fact there are people on this board with generations of SMU blood. I don't question their posts or get in their face either.I try to provide intelligent comment.I enjoy the ether net relationships that we build with others but I can't accept Stallions perspective on the present junior/senior class.I could comment further but I'll leave it at that.

OK-then show me one source that backs up what you are saying.

Go fbdad!!! Many don't realize what the parent of an athlete goes thru when his team is losing. It sometimes hurts badly but you don't give up. I wish the fans on this board had half as much guts and invested as heavily in a team as either the players or their parents. No- the Ponies aren't very good but that doesn't mean a lack of effort. At 0-5, they still have better attiudes than the fans.

Oh stop being such a crybaby-you've been attacking me on these boards for years as you readily admit. You want to dish it out-be willing to take it in return or get off these boards. You don't respond because I have posted factually and you have nothing to dispute it.

This is getting ridiculous. Lets not make this fans against parents. Everybody is making categorical statements, and nothing works that way. There are rose-colored fans, constructive critics and then there are whiners and complainers. There are also an equal variety of parents ranging from true supporters to whiners and complainers. Thats the way it is EVERYWHERE, get over it. A certain amount of heat comes with college football and being 0-5. Its also never any individual's or single class's fault when a team is struggling. My personal feeling is that fans should layoff individual players in a critical way, but unit, team and program performance is fair game to analyze and critique. SOME parents and insiders need to remember this isn't high school ball, and SOME fans need to remember this ain't pro football either.

Stallion, make your mind up. You previously suggested that I move from the Maniac board to the Sunshine board where I belonged. I did this and now you suggest I should maybe leave this board because how dare I disagree with Stallion. You are getting childish in your old age. Hey, you did get one thing right,I do cry , I cried when my talentless, according to you, junior tore his ACL during the OS game trying his best for the team.Do you know what a lost season means to one of these kids, ask the Comet or any other player thats missed a season due to injury. There were a lot of tears in this family and nobody is ashamed of it.This will be my final response to any of Stallions posts/opinions because I have no respect at all for the individual. He can take his facts and shove them....

I would just like to add that I do not play football and my dad will support the Red and the Blue for the rest of his life. He loves the school probably as much as I do just because he was so proud of me for deciding to go there. He was the one that said to me "I think your wrong" after I said we would "never be good again" after losing to UTEP. Knowing this it is easy to see that player parents will definitely be fans for life. Long-live fans that do not and never will attend SMU. That's what made UT,A&M, and Tech such great programs(yes, I hate all of them, too).
