Happened to be in a meeting today with someone close to Rice QB Clement from down here in Alamo Heights. We were talking about who may be new SMU coach and I said I was happy Rice beat UTEP and Chase did so well. He mentions that Chase had thought about SMU but never had any contact from SMU.
Glad we didn't think he was good enough to even contact even though he beat UTEP this weekend. Don't give me excuse he couldn't get into SMU, if he got into Rice he would have done fine at SMU. Besides, I am sure he could have at least been a decent backup for us.
Same old story that I really hope changes with the new leadership. Again I agree we need to fix model, but still need to broaden our nets as to who we go after and who we at least contact.

expony, you're so matter of fact with your wealth of insider info and I always wonder why.
Cardwell was a year older than Welker, thus Mike Cavan failed to recruit him. Welker was going wherever Mike Leach ended up as they developed that relationship while Leach was OC at Oklahoma and Welker played HS in OKC. Had Leach not gotten the Tech gig, Welker would have walked on at OU.
His high school delivers a few kids each year to SMU, so a sincere interest was present, but he was simply following Leach.
