I agree. Lost a close one 31-28 this weekend which could have made them 5-1 in conference. May be a year or two early for Gill. Wouldn't be availiable until at least the end of the Season.
I'm definitely high on Gill. With all the talk of us taking coaches that are damaged in one way or another, there is a guy from the DFW area that has a successful past as an assistant and is currently turning around one of the worst programs in D1. He will be in a very similar position coming into SMU, except that he will have Texas to recruit out of...I can only imagine that is better than recruiting in upstate New York.
The inexperience doesn't bother me nearly as much as the problems Bowden and Barnett have been through. As Stallion points out, he hasn't finished the job at Buffalo by any means, but for year 1 of a turn around I think he is doing a fine job.
What I don't know is:
Who would he be able to attract to SMU as assistant coaches?
Does he have close ties to the area high school coaches (did he recruit Texas for Nebraska)?
Is he in a position to accept this job? Meaning, is the Nebraska job just around the corner? What type of promises has he made the Buffalo community?
