I just heard through the mill that Hal Mumme has verbally agreed to accept the job at SMU once his the season ends. He's putting a staff together as we speak to begin recruiting.
I'm excited about this guy.... take a look at Kentucky this year. ALL HAL ALL THE TIME!

Most Aggie football fans I spoke with at the time of Hal Mumme's hiring were a little disappointed in the decision.
The majority of them said they had thought the Aggies would finally bring in a big-name coach or at least one that has some name recognition as we move into the Western Athletic Conference next fall. When Mumme was announced as the new coach of the New Mexico State University football team, there was a collective gasp among Aggie faithful. Sports radio shows poked fun at the decision, especially in Albuquerque. The news had to be taken with a grain of salt for most Aggie fans.
The first question that came to mind when Mumme was announced, was "Who is he?" Before school let out and in between talking with some Aggie football players, I got the impression that new athletic director McKinley Boston and former director of athletics Brian Faison were going to hire someone who would generate excitement right away. Former University of Washington and University of Colorado coach Rick Neuheisel was available, for instance.
There was speculation that Boston would look at Eric Price from the University of Texas-El Paso. Price, as you probably guessed, is the son of Mike Price. The 37-year old has been Price's offensive coordinator for several years and had a stint as a coordinator with the New York Jets. Instead, Price will probably be given a chance by another school and Neuheisel will rebuild his image as the quarterbacks coach with the Baltimore Ravens before moving on to a big name school.
The hiring of Mumme won't please most Aggie football fans right away. It'll take some time to get used to saying "Coach Mumme," so let's take it day by day. As for me, it'll be a fun name for headlines.
If you look at what Mumme did while coach at the University of Kentucky, taking the Wildcats to two bowls in four years and helping develop quarterback Tim Couch into the No. 1 overall NFL draft pick in 1999, you might rest a little easier. Just don't look at Couch's NFL career. But if you do, look at it this way: if Mumme can turn Couch into the No. 1 overall NFL draft pick, that says something about his coaching, right?
The violations that occurred within the Kentucky football program that led to Mumme's resignation are a black eye on his hiring. Some say he didn't participate directly in the violations, but "took the bullet" for them. Believe what you will.
After leaving Kentucky, Mumme moved on to tiny Southeastern Louisiana University to resurrect a football program that had been dormant for close to 20 years, and he was moderately successful there, considering the situation. What impressed Boston about Mumme was that he was able to bring his very impressive coaching staff with him to Aggieland, including his defensive coordinator, Woody Widenhofer, who might just be as qualified as Mumme for the NMSU head coaching job.
Widenhofer began his coaching career in the college ranks before agreeing to become linebacker coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1973. After four years and two Super Bowl rings, Widenhofer became the Steeler's defensive coordinator, building the historic "Steel Curtain" defense, which won two more Super Bowl titles.
Widenhofer then went on to coach for the University of Missouri, the Detroit Lions, the Cleveland Browns and at Vanderbilt University. Widenhofer will bring the Aggies 17 years of NFL coaching experience and 15 years of college coaching experience.
So, if you don't know who Mumme is, maybe your parents will know who Widenhofer is. If anything, maybe Widenhofer will wear his diamond-and jewel-studded Super Bowl rings.
And maybe, just maybe, if we're lucky, Mumme will turn out to be the diamond-in-the-rough Boston and the rest of us hope he'll be.
