This whole thread is a mess and has spiraled into complete stupidity.

You act like bithcdogs in heat trying to get the scoop and you'll believe anything.

we've learned that Barnett is not getting the job which is more than I learned from your post. I'd say this is one of the best threads all week.

How do you know that? And how do you know that Orsini only said that to that person to throw him off the trail?

So we've learned nothing.

because the two people who confirmed the quote have as much street cred as any posters on this board. Why do you think President Turner was talking to them in the first place.

Thanks. It's about time someone answered the "How do you know that."

But one said Orsini. You're saying Turner. So what are we talking about here?

Of course, now that I'm Turner, and if I have learned this has gotten onto the board, I'd probably say nothing to them anymore because they obviously can't keep their mouths shut!

So Orsini has changed? Didn't he hire resume-challenged O'Leary at UCF?

I had decided not to post what I was told yesterday..... I did, only because the "quote was being questioned" This was directly to me, from Turner and Orsini.

FWIW, Orsini also said in another conversation that "we can do much better than Barnett." And "We have a great deal of interest from coaches better than Barnett."

Those are not direct quotes, but close. I used quotations marks to indicate it was from him and not me.

Is what he saying true. I do not know. He may just be keeping positive, and I can assure you he is not going to tell me or any of us anything. There are people far higher up the food chain than us that are getting even less information and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Why do we have to belittle his capability to acquire a good coach before he gets one. We will have plenty of time to ridicule the decision if so desired after the selection is made. Chill out and enjoy college football, maybe not at its finest, but hasn't the weather been great this season?

I really think Mike Shula will be our next head coach. Young, national name, ZERO baggage, won 10 games a bama, and I don't think he can get a BCS level job yet

Well, boys and girls, if that is true, I can tell you that you better start lowering your expectations. Again, for what a message board post is worth, take it from me that the interest in this job is just not there.

If, indeed, it is true that Barnett is "out", I suspect that Orsini's hands are tied by those above him. Good grief, a guy like Barnett is supposedly willing to come to SMU and he is rejected? C'mon. Get ready for a bad day at black rock.

Alright I've been reading this enough. There may very well not be a happy ending for SMU in presenting Terry Bowden or Urban Meyer at the podium, but to say there is no interest is plain wrong. There is certainly interest in the position, more so than some people would have originally thought. This does not mean that they are backstabbing one another to be the lucky son-of-a-gun to be named head coach, but to say that Orsini's desk is a barren wasteland devoid of quality candidates is an incorrect statement.

Get ready for a bad day at black rock? Orsini has been an individual particularly aware of publicity, press, and the outside world's opinion of the school. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that hiring Barnett would be a heap of negative publicity, and negate the news of "hey look! we hired a real coach!" It's tough to say who has an acceptable rap sheet, and who doesn't, and that's debatable...everyone will have their opinion.

I'm not talking out of my own backside here, and of course I don't hold some magical key. But to say there is a lack of interest from QUALITY head coaching candidates is a completely incorrect statement.

Well, maybe I should have said there is a complete lack of interest from 2 of the names that have been floating around on this board since they told me so themselves, at least in a manner of speaking. And also that there seems to be a complete lack of interest from other coaches from what I've been told by others with firsthand information. When SMU hires from "the usual suspects" don't say I didn't tell you that was a huge probability.

Shula did better at Bama than APPLESABAN has done up to now. APPLESABAN lost again this time to the mighty Mississppi State Bulldogs this past week end. I'm sure Bama Alums were pleased with that.

That's perfectly fine to say that. I'm not going to say you're stupid, or say you're wrong, because it's not up to me to decide, and no one really knows 100%. All I'll say is that my grounded beliefs are the complete opposite, that there has been significant interest. Whether that interest develops into a head coach is something probably 1 or 2 people know, and none of us are them.

My biggest question is: Why would Turner answer that? Especially in a forum such as tailgating? He has been in the public arena here for over a decade, and WHY would anyone of importance say ANYTHING of substance to ANYONE? Even a significant booster. You wouldn't expect them to say word one that isn't wishy-washy at a place like that. Here's what it usually is.

Guy 1: So how about Gary Barnett?
Turner: Well we're looking at getting the best possible coach in the country to build a winning program, and we'll certainly look at every one qualified.

Here's how it doesn't (shouldn't?) go:

Guy 1: So...Gary Barnett.
Turner: No. We won't hire him.

Now that's paraphrasing but it's a concrete and definitive answer about a significant process going on at the school. Why?
