Pathetic Coaching

Postby Johnny Rock » Sun Oct 12, 2003 8:42 am

It is hard to believe that SMU struggles to get first downs against a poor defensive team. I can understand struggling against Oklahoma State, but this is ridiculous. The play calling is too predictable. We ran well early and San Jose State adjusted. We still attempted to run and were stopped consistently. This is the worst that I have seen SMU football in over ten years. Bennett better find him a competent quarterback or he will never win another game at SMU. Again, Johnny stresses moving down to Division II so that we can be competitive. The bottom tier Division 1 teams are easily beating us. Why continue to lose like this?

I am as disgusted as anybody regarding the caliber of our play. It is predictable, lifeless, and boring. The 3rd quarter of last night's game indicates that it is possible for us to play a different kind of game, so I totally don't get the gameplan used throughout the first half.

Your suggestion of dropping to Div II would not change the way we are playing or being coached, and would probably produce more disappointing results than you would think. Besides, that issue was addressed by the Board of Trustees before Ford was built. D-II was unanimously eliminated as an option for then or the future. It was only then that the half dozen alums stepped forward with the money to build Ford.

 The coaching is ??? Two 3rd quarter TD's. Both via the pass. Note: In the 3rd, Bartel was allowed to move and roll out. This bought time and - duh - we had some success. At the end of the 3rd/start of the 4th, when we have the momentum, here is the 3 play series.

* Kincade handoff off right tackle - ZILCH!
* Kincade handoff to the left - ZILCH again.

(Mind you , he has a 2 yard per carry average at this point - and - we still need 2 scores).

3rd down - what do ya' know - pass attempt in long yardage ... that failed.

Yes, we have a QB that is struggling but the play calling gives NO ONE a chance...other than for KK to pad his stats (as his yards per carry average drops).

An O-coordinator up Denton way would love to be here, and there is no reason the one we have shouldn't be back at Southwest Louisiana State Teachers Polytechnic Institute where he belongs (assumes his play calling isn't being nixed by the head coach).

Then again, let's give credit to both sides. We had D-backs that did NOT want to hit anyone. Several instances where the attempt was so poorly disguised that ...well, it was embarrasing.

The game was pitiful. Makes you wonder how UHouston takes a 1st year coach only 2 years removed from HS level and completely reverses their fortunes. Baylor got spanked yesterday but at least Guy has 2 wins against D-1 teams.
