source or rumor?

He seems an odd fit, as he coached at Cal and USC before the NFL. No texas ties whatsoever.

Franchione would not be a bad choice. I like Barnett. Marty Schottenheimer would be pretty funny as coach here. At least he'd have total control on the field and in recruiting which he seems to like. San Diego had a great win last night, but clearly was much better with Marty. The guy is an a type A hole, but gets the job done. I'm not sold on Mariucci, but again he'd be an upgrade from where we are now. I'm a little nervous about the coach is still coaching comment. That could also mean a coordinator from UT, Mizzou, or another school and that would not make the splash that we need to make. We need a coach that will make the alumni, faculty, and press go, wow! Not another, SMU just hired another up and coming assistant coach who proclaims that he knows how to turn the program around.

Those are not direct quotes, but close. I used quotations marks to indicate it was from him and not me.

Is what he saying true. I do not know. He may just be keeping positive, and I can assure you he is not going to tell me or any of us anything. There are people far higher up the food chain than us that are getting even less information and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Why do we have to belittle his capability to acquire a good coach before he gets one. We will have plenty of time to ridicule the decision if so desired after the selection is made. Chill out and enjoy college football, maybe not at its finest, but hasn't the weather been great this season?

I have no idea if he said that or not, but I would have a hard time believing that someone like Steve Orsini would made such derogatory remarks about a coach that has expressed interest in the position. I am NOT a Barnett fan, and wouldn't care to see him at SMU, but I still don't think that an AD at an institution such as SMU would say something like that.

Ok. I will change ears before I listen next time.

mrydel: I did not mean to offend you. I am new to Dallas and obviously do not know this board very well.

Doesn't it strike you as an odd statement? I guess if you are close with Orsini then he would feel comfortable making a statement like that, but most people in those types of positions seem to be more diplomatic when making statements about coaches, players, etc.

What was your reaction when he said it?

If we need a coach that would make the alumni, faculty, and press go "wow," why on Earth would Franchiphony not be a bad choice. He's a sorry coach. What has he done in his last 2 coaching jobs?

My honest reaction was and still is that Orsini knows exactly what he is doing and part of that means not letting anyone but himself know what he is doing. He could have signed Barnett 2 weeks ago and still made those statements. He is a very smart business man in my opinion and that includes his political ability to say a lot without saying anything. We on the blvd do not hold some sort of spell over him that makes him tell us things he is not even telling the selection committee.

It is fun to speculate, but I really believe that when all is said and done Orsini will have a good hire and we will be happy until at least the end of the first game next season. And that would even include a Fran hire. Orsini will not only hire good but will package the hire in a way that will be hard not to love.

And I was not offended. I am a happy person who enjoys the atmosphere of college football. The weather is going to be great on Saturday, let's play 2!!
