O'Leary?

Post by Alaric »

What about George O'Leary? Makes $1 million/year already and probably a candidate for other jobs of course.

Okay, how much baggage can we stand? If Barnett is out and Bowden is out and baggage really is an issue, can we hire a guy who lied on his resume? I know Orsini hired him one before, but that was not at SMU.

George "Lena Guerrero" Leary! Old lies on resumes aren't issues for me anymore if the guy can coach. I would have cared about this before 20 years of losing

I don't care either, but the indication lately is that with Barnett and Bowden perhaps the scumbag factor has played a role in eliminating them from the list of potentials. Of course, I'm just repeating hearsay from elsewhere on the board and from the 'vard. Although I will say on the 'vard it was told to me by a party to the conversation with Turner and Orsini about Barnett.

By leading UCF into the conference championship again, O'leary has probably positioned himself to get another shot as a BCS head coach. I doubt he'd want to rebuild another c-usa team.
Those who complain about a problem are simply wasting time they could use to fix it.

Potential is nothing, performance is everything.

That sounds like Bennett's recruiting model. Man, that guy's good, he probably wouldn't want to play for SMU. Screw it. Pony up with some real money, make him more comfortable with the model and recruit the coach.

O'Leary got the nod at UCF after a pretty thorough vetting process, and was not getting any sniffs for the most part after the ND resume thing. Story I heard is that Orsini was looking for a major bang in both media and HC status, and O'Leary provided both. He will not be coming to SMU, and rumor at UCF is that he is getting a look from Syracuse.

He also had a major 'down' year while at UCF, but has recruited the Central Florida area with headlong abandon, picking up the scraps from UF, FSU, Miami and USF. The payoff was this year, and perhaps next if Smith decides to forego the NFL draft and come back for his senior year.

Syracuse would have to dig deep in their pockets to get a shot at Coach O'Leary. He is in the second year of a 10 year contract. I'm not sure what the exact buy out number is at this point, but it is somewhere in the ball park of $5 million bucks.

Hopefully he has updated his resume and taken out the questionable data. :)
