But where do you draw the line ponyboy? That would eliminate just damn near everybody that has been mentioned on the board. That leaves you with coordinators, or d-1aa guys, or even worse, guys who got canned for reasons other than off-field issues like they could not win.

The only baggage SMU will tolerate is poor performance!

Please list the "good coaches without the blemishes."

Mike Shula, Paul Johnson, Turner Gill, Dave Christensen, Steve Mariucci, Glen Mason, Bo Pelini, Major Applewhite, Gus Malzahn, etc.

Now I didn't quite mean without blemish all, I merely meant the blemishes of Barnett and Neuheisel and the like. Like it or not, if we hire a coach with a history of recruiting scandals and NCAA infractions, we will be seen as reverting back to cheating by a majority of the public. That's the albatross that hangs around our neck with the death penalty being mentioned in almost every article about SMU nationally.

Do you even know what happened to Neuheisel? Do you realize that he SUED and WON over what happened to him? That means someone thinks he didn't do anything wrong.
Neuheisel was fired in the summer of 2003 from the University of Washington for participating in a neighborhood pool for the NCAA Basketball Tournament. He first denied the acusation to investigators, and before admitting to it after consultation with school officials. The gambling case became a local sensation when it was revealed that he had received an internal UW memo which authorized gambling in off-campus tournament basketball pools. That fall, the NCAA infractions committee found Neuheisel violated NCAA rules against gambling but didn't sanction him, citing the memo by Washington's former compliance officer that mistakenly authorized this type of gambling. It also became apparent that the NCAA violated its own rules when questioning Neuheisel about the gambling.

OH GOSH THE NCAA EVEN DID SOMETHING WRONG
Legal proceedings enabled Neuheisel to collect a $4.5 million settlement and essentially clear him of wrongdoing as the NCAA and University of Washington were forced to abandon their case.

Now, what's that wrongdoings you were talking about?

What exactly did Bowden do, anyway? He was brought into an Auburn program that was getting ready to be put on probation because of cheating by the previous staff. He has no ncaa baggage at all. He stopped the cheating.

All there is are stupid internet rumors. He has publicly said that he sat out to go into broadcasting, and never even accepted a formal interview during that time. It was his choice to stay out. Now some lucky program is going to get him - and they're going to win. I just hope its SMU.

Just because he won, doesn't mean he was completely innocent. He still lied to NCAA investigators about his gambling.

Don't misunderstand me. I care first and foremost about winning. As long as any coach who comes here doesn't detrimentally affect that, I could care less about his past.

My point above about Turner was that there's no hypocrisy in his statement about wanting to avoid someone with a past. It's probably unwise to restrict such candidates -- unless of course you already have someone picked out who happens not to have a past and simply want to get some brownie points. But I don't see any hypocrisy.

If that's true, and frankly it may well be, then it must be somebody that you and me and the rest of the board have not talked about, unless of course it is somebody who is getting fired or has gotten fired for not winning.

My tiny brain simply cannot comprehend what is going on over ther right now.

"My point above about Turner was that there's no hypocrisy in his statement about wanting to avoid someone with a past."

Well, lets just say I agree to disagree. His comment was the following "We would prefer to have indivuduals where there is no controversy in respect about how they've run those programs."

Myself, I feel that as a President of the a University, when your University is cited for a lack of institutional control, there is some controversy as to how you "run your program." Just my opinion that most would consider a fact.

No, actually my point is Barnett has strippers on his resume, Turner has strippers on his resume......they could both be in Dallas.....can't we all get a long?

I believe that's Abezontar's attempt to get the thread deleted. I certainly hope it was not an invite, cough, cough.
