What's up with Kate?

Postby BRStang » Wed Nov 14, 2007 9:33 pm

What is she taking the week off? Or is she just staring at the phone waiting for it to ring?

If UT were looking for a new coach, no doubt someone from the DMN would be camped outside Dodds' office waiting for the janitor with a wad of cash in hand.

I'm not being critical of the DMN for not publishing an article every day about our search, but a little insight on the blog would be nice. Is there any shred of truth to the Football Rumor Mill rumor, Kate? Or do you have a clue?

Give her time. We all know she uses this board for scoops.

Isn't there something wrong with that? Shouldn't it be the other way around? At least with something like this?

*ring ring*

"Hello, Mr. Orsini's office."

"Uh, hi, this is Kate H. Is Mr. Orsini in?"

"No, I'm afraid he's in a meeting. Shall I tell him you called again?"

"Yes, please. Can you give him my cell number this time?"

"I gave it to him yesterday."

"Oh, ok. Well, uh, thank you."

"Buh-bye."

I would expect she's calling every Barnett and Bowden and Applewhite (or their agents) out there. She seems far more thorough than some other DMN hacks.

Oh, I guess I must have just missed her lastest insightful, gumshoe reporting and commentary on the DMN blog since her last entry: "Looking for a Job?" on November 6. Or, wait, I forget: Was that the Blogger who entered that? 8)

If UT were looking for a new coach, it would be much bigger news.

Folks,
This is speculation but who is to say that Orsini hasn't been telling her stuff but indicated that a lot of it is "off the record" so she can't write it?

I'm sure Kate, her editor, Orsini and whoever else probably had some kind of sit down discussion about this and had to come to some understanding.

Perhaps the DMN's silence, which is apparently mirroring Orsini's silence, may be helping the search.

Here's the deal, guys: There's no deal.

From what I've heard through the grapevine, SMU isn't anywhere near hiring anyone. They're grasping at straws, reaching out to potential candidates and asking if they might be interested in SMU.

This isn't a done deal. It's an ordeal. It's going to be a difficult hire. We may eventually end up with someone who has a WOW factor, but that person hasn't been identified yet.

It's also a week before Thanksgiving. How many coaching hires have ever, ever been announced before Thanksgiving? If we're talking to people currently coaching, you're not going to get into serious discussions until their regular season is done. That's just how it works. The period between Thanksgiving and the major bowls is when the most activity is going to take place.

The reason Kate doesn't have any news is because there's no news to report. Firing Bennett in mid-season gave us a jump on the hiring process, but that doesn't mean the hire is going to happen any sooner.

Relax, take a deep breath. When things start heating up, I'm sure Kate will have something to report. Either that, or Orsini is going to do such a good job of keeping things under wraps that everyone will find out at the same time. Hiring a FB coach is a long process that usually has a quick conclusion. Once the right guy is identified and he reciprocates, things will move very fast. It's just going to take a while to get there.

Okay, now we have covered the full spectrum on herre. Everything from a "splash/wow/homerun/shockwave" current d-1 hire to a "big name" with baggage hire to an up-and-coming coordinator to an NFL guy, and now to "we can't even find anybody remotely interested in the SMU job."

Did I leave anything out?

I am now thoroghly confused to the point of not caring anymore. In fact, I have no expectations we will hire a reasonably good coach. But I hope to be pleasantly surprised by our hire.

Only Orsini knows -- and nobody else. The grapevine has withered because their ain't no grapes on it.

Good luck with such an unpopular message. Maybe you'll get a better reception than I did on this.

If it turns out that you are wrong, and this time SMU does hire a coach that meets our high hopes, will you go away? Pretty please?

First of all - I'm not saying Orsini cant pull something out of his rear-end. I'm saying it is not happening now because there is little interest in this job that I am aware of.

But now if I turn out to be correct and we wind up with scraps from the table, are you going to come and give biggin a little lovin'? :P
