Besides the money, how did he get the players to come to SMU? Since everybody was paying players he had to have something else going for him.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I also vaguely remember him being on the failed CNNSI Network doing NFL analysis.

Ron Meyer was extremely organized, genuine, and knew how to sell SMU/Dallas. He and his staff worked around the clock on recruiting and game plan. Each coach had a recruiting region and we took care of the recruits like everyone else, but Meyer's coaches had a way with the players that Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas didn't have. If you were recruited by Ron, Steve Endicott, etc. you felt like they really cared about you and it was genuine. Texas and Arkansas would make threats and demands and thought they could buy you. Going back to being organized, Meyer made sure there was someone in Houston, Austin, San Antonio that made sure the recruit got on the plane and that there was someone at Love Field to take the recruit for the weekend visit. Besides being organized and genuine, Meyer saw the value of Dallas, SMU, and all the benefits of having an SMU degree after graduation if you stayed in Dallas or worked anywhere.

Meyer also had the kind of personality that really struck you when you met him. I remember when he was hired, I was assigned to go interview him for the Daily Campus and while he was very busy, he took the time for the interview and made it seem like he enjoyed it. As long as he knew that the rules aren't the same as back then, he'd be an improvement over what we've had.

Good guy, even to walk-ons in 1977-78. Things would have been significantly different the past six years on the field with him on the sideline...he was prepared, and had expectations that were clearly communicated to the players.

The train-wreck of scandal that was SMU football did not start with him, and to some degree he seems to get less scrutiny than other figures involved ( ie. Collins, Hitch, the gov, etc. ). What he COULD do is motivate and develop a mindset to achieve...something sorely lacking these past few campaigns.

No it pretty well did start with Ron Meyer-I loved him but the organized cheating at SMU was a result of Ron Meyer.

My Tivo catches the Holiday Bowl which the BYU Channel seems to broadcast at least once a month. While the outcome never changes, one thing that always stands out is how Meyer and his assistants appear to be complete control on the sidelines unlike the present staff.

I will say also that he was creative at offense. When he had Mike Ford, the offense looked like touch football. Everybody going out on patterns with an occasional draw. Then he got Dickerson and James and switched to a pro set. The he went to the NFL and Collins switched to a triple option. You'd see him make his offense fit his talent.

And Stallion, Dave Smith was his predecessor. And Smith was personally paying players. So, payola was there before Meyer, Meyer just refined it to an art form.

One other plus about Meyer. He had excellent assistant coaches. Coaches such as Dante Scarnicchia, Bill Muir (both in the NFL), Louis Campbell (moved on to coach at Alabama with Bear Bryant), Hardy McCrary (now at UT), Steve Sidwell (pro DC for years, now with health issues) to name a few. Meyer's teams flew to the ball (notice some of the current defensive players. Some don't fly to the ball and very few take the extra step to hit someone). Meyer's teams didn't make a huge amount of stupid mistakes (penalties). Turnovers were not an issue with Meyer's teams.

Now there is no way we get Meyer back. But hopefully, our next coach will have players flying to the ball. We will eliminate the idiot penalties and we will cut way down on turnovers. Just do those three things and the talent we have right now is 8-2.

Dante is co head coach of the New England Patriots. I doubt he would be interested. Muir is a highly respect Offensive line coach in the NFL and has been for decades. He too would not be interested in the SMU job. I am not sure of Campbell. The previous three would probably be around Meyer's age and less likely to want the SMU job. Hardy McCrary is with UT and probably is about the right age. He doesn't have HC experience, though and we need someone with the CEO skills of a successful HC. The best one could hope for is if we consult Meyer about possible candidates. He may have some insight and recommendations.

That is pure speculation as Orsini probably has as much if not more insight into the current candidates and their capabilities.
