what he is saying is that this team can't wait until 2006 to show improvement. The recruiting momentum won't last long unless we make some quick improvement. You guys assuming that Bennett will be able to recruit like he did last year if if we keep playing like we have the last 2 years are smoking something. I have reservations about burning a redshirt too but I have less reservations if Phillips truly will be the man. Bennett realizes I think that he can't come into another season with yet another inexperienced freshman QB.

Re: burning Phillips' redshirt year .... this might turn out to be brilliant. If Coach Bennett signs a JUCO quarterback who turns out to be a stud, Phillips can then redshirt next year, and observe after getting a few games under his belt this year. It might be perfect. Expose him to what he's facing down the road, then let him step back for a year and learn, with a better understanding of what goes into the job.

Of course, that's an ideal situation. We'll see if everything falls into place.

Yeah right. Those QB's have zero talent. Get over it.

I'm glad to hear Bennett pissed off. These kids need a reality check.

Pellerin and Cleveland came in with 8:45 to go in the second quarter. From that exact moment the offense was much sharper. Balls were immediately caught. The offense moved. Then they left to come in again sporadically. Those 2 and Comet need to be in the game. They should be the starters.

The DBs were horrific. No safety play at all which I guess is Bartel's fault.

Good luck with Phillips.

Nacho- shutup. The whole team is to blame. Do you actually read the whole thread before you post anymore?

I read all the posts. What's your problem with my response?

Lots of good comments on this one but according to a coaching source at Mesquite this move probably won't work out. And that is because the offense is not designed for a running QB. And in fact they don't want the QB to run. That's why Mesquites QB was moved, because he would spilt after the second read was covered and run. Coach wants the QB to stay in the pocket and read 1,2,3 all of the reads. What we are seeing is the so called molding of QB's instead of using there talent and play making abilities. So unless coach is now going let Mr. Phillips flush and run I suspect that we will see more of the same type of non-Production. The only way to be a pure pocket passing Offense is that there must be fantastic pocket blocking against blitzes at all times. Go ahead try anyone you want at QB. You no my choice. Looks to me like we better be going after all of the biggest smartest O-linemen we can get.

i too wish we could have redshirted Phillips, but i agree with Stallion on the reasons to lift it. We have to show some improvement for current team morale, and future recruits. We need a spark of hope. Pellerin and Cleveland need to be in there more, as well as more of the redshirt o-linemen. I am so SICK of seeing our o-line get pushed back on third and one! I too will be going to Tulsa!

Joyous I'm glad you weren't there to see it. Comet did have a couple of great catches though. Remember the worst game you ever saw from the Cavan era. This was worse.

I ran into PX after the game. He was sorry to miss you and Mr C. He wanted to let you know how sorry he is about the way the season has gone. I'm very sorry for the 2 of you also. I'm sorry for all of the parents. I'm sorry for myself too. I'm sorry that I take it hard. I try not to but it does something to me. I invest too much emotionally in this. I tell myself before every game to let it roll. I watch pretty impassively for the most part. After the game it slowly settles in. I begin to feel betrayed. I feel betrayed by SMU. They have let us all down. Look at the results over the last 15 years. How could any person stay a fan of this for so long? The worst part is that it is getting worse. This year is worse than last year. At least you will be out of this mess after this year. From what I hear Chris has graduated. Good for him. He is a good kid. He will be fine. He has great parents. I hope to see you at the next game. Mr C seemed okay after the game. I think we are all kind of getting used to it by now.

Joyous, could you expound on this a bit? What do we need to know?

Here is where Bennett screwed up. He should have opened up the offense earlier to make a quicker determination on Bartel (I refuse to comment on those who use the words ‘Tate’ and ‘QB’ in the same sentence). Having scored no more than one TD in each of the first 3 games, he could have then moved to the more mobile Phillips against Nevada, or at the latest, UTEP. Tate is not the answer and playing him instead of Chris in Nevada was a huge mistake. Now, in a somewhat knee-jerk reaction, he pulls the trigger. IMO a more thought-out plan would have given Chris an additional 2 or 3 games of critical experience.

Here is where Bennett shines. “We’re going to get a JC quarterback”. Arguably the most satisfying quote in years. Bennett is PO’d, and I agree FM, that is a good thing. The question that absolutely begs to be asked is are we also going to get JC help at OL, DL, WR and DB? With the pending loss of quality players Reindl and Harris, a couple of injuries to our OL (it happens, you know) and we are in the same boat as today.

As I see it, if this train-wreck of a season can be the catalyst for positive change, maybe it won’t be so bad after all.

SoCal I agree with your thoughts completely. I sent Coach an e-mail a couple of weeks ago regarding Phillips using much the same rationale you have laid out.

Also, to hear him say "JC help", is a huge breakthrough that I never dreamed would be a possibility.

By the way, I have forwarded the Bennett post game audio to the Webmaster. Hope he is able to post it as it was a 3MB file.

Word is these guys played intermural sports on Thursday night before this week's game. What is with that?

That may be, but his skills might give the offense a lift, if only for the simple fact that he's sort of a combination of the strengths of Bartel and Wallis. He has a strong arm, and good wheels. So while he learns what's going on out there, his athletic ability might allow him to escape pressure a little bit, allowing receivers to get open downfield.

Note to Phillips: the game is going to be faster than what you've seen in HS or in practice. While you're running around out there, hold the ball up high with both hands, and stay true to your learned mechanics. Good luck Saturday - BEAT TULSA!
