Shula is QB coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Shula gets high marks from Gene Stallings. Stallings says Shula inherited a mess from Franchione and the NCAA penalties that were in place at the time, and still made Alabama competitive quickly until his QB went down early in his last season with a major injury. He beat TTech in the Cotton Bowl.

why is there not more excitement and speculation that Shula could be Orsini's guy? A very "Doherty - like" hire in my opinion and perhaps a chance one of his 1st recruits could be a transfer - QB McElroy who I believe was a Shula recruit and is currently riding the pine at Bama. Chew on that possibility.

Tommy is in his 9th year at Clemson and has only won 60% of his games. That's just not "getting it done" at a place like Clemson, that at least has a National Championship within most people's memories.
If Clemson loses to SC this weekend, Clemson is unlikely to extend Tommy's contract. There is still a hefty buyout this year, but it drops off dramatically next year...and any extension is likely to be a "token" deal. On the other hand, it Clemson beats SC in Columbia and then wins their bowl game, Bowden has enough coming back that they could compete for the ACC title next year.
Any way you cut it, it would truly be a shocker for Tommy Bowden to be named SMU's next coach. Perhaps Orsini has a plan to hire Tommy Bowden and Tommy will have both Terry and the youngest brother (who was cut loose from FSU last year) on his staff. Now THAT would REALLY be a WOW hire.
But this thread is about Shula, who is flying under the radar in all this coach talk and the more I think about him, the more excited I get about that possibility. Bama is continuing to subsidize his salary and we can pay him more than he's making as a QB coach in Jacksonville. Plus...it might just attract the former SLC QB, McElroy to transfer and finish his last 2 yrs of eligibility at SMU??? Competition for JWill in his senior year?

Mike Shula is my 3rd choice, but I think he would do a great job at SMU.
