Major Applewhite...

Postby BringBackThePonies03 » Thu Nov 22, 2007 7:50 pm

I feel like enough people aren't bring up this name! This is the type of guy we want to come in and take over this program! A young guy, who has NO head coaching experience, who wants this job worse that anyone can imagine. Sure Bowden may come in and do alright, but he is using SMU as a fall back option, as is Franchoine, Nueheisel, Barnett, etc. They are all has beens! Sure they did well in their careers for a little while, but they aren't head coaches right now because they more or less failed! Lets get some young blood in here! Some one who knows the Texas area...Some one who knows offense and someone who is fired up about getting the opportunity! Look what he has done in his short career, look how he has vaulted up the rankings...I mean look what he did last year with Rice's WR, turned him into an All-American! I GUARANTEE you that if SMU gives Major Applewhite a chance, he will do unbelievably well and will do unbelievably well fast!

I'm just afraid it will be hard to entice him to come. I think he already knows that if the offense does well, the Alabama job is his when Saban retires. Not to mention, he is at the top of Texas' list when the Tobacco Road Con Man retires.

Applewhite looked good last year working as OC for Coach Todd Graham at Rice (Graham is now at Tulsa). In 2005, Applewhite was at Syracuse where they went 1-11. This year he is OC at Alabama where they hired high priced Nick Saban and are having an off year 6-5 with a game left at tough rival Auburn.... Applewhite's Alabama offense has had 8 or 9 turnovers in the last two back to back embarassing loses to Miss. State and 5-6 Sun Belt Conference's Lousiana MONROE 21-14 at Alabama..... Thats right, I said Monroe beat Alabama last week end...as in the team that also lost to 1-10 North Texas earlier this year...It is waaaay to early for any team in their right mind to consider Major Applewhite as their head coach. He might even get fired at Alabama after their poor offensive performance this year.

I'd rather not have a coach whom I can actually recall seeing play in college. Perhaps that's discrimanatory, and I'd probably make an exception for Gil, but I'd rather skip the on the job HC training that we had to live through w/ PB.

With the contract he signed, Saban isn't going anywhere for a while.
Some people aren't motivated by money above all else. Saban appears to be someone who is.

I disagree.

Orsini will go his own way & probably hire some O'Learhy clone.

But I hold out on the prospect of youth-- Dodge, Applewhite, Gill. I'd take any of them. They are interchangeable to me. Recruiting to SMU for the next 5 years will require someone who has a story and ALL of the above have playing creds.

This is what the next tier players want when they can't get the attention of UT/OU/LSU.

For the last 5 years, this program traveled in a complete circle with older coaches. I don't want a HC as old as me anymore.

Thank you! That is exactly what I am talking about...I just wanted some hype built up for the man, I understand he is probably the second most talked about legitimate candidate, but we need to press the issue! Who knows who looks at this board...I really feel Applewhite is the best candidate for the job and the ability to recruit in Texas is obviously VERY IMPORTANT and he can do this for us!

Applewhite was a great player who didn't get a fair shake at Texas because of Chris Simms, but Applewhite's coaching record is incomplete at best. 1-11 at Syracuse and 6-6 at Alabama is not going to make him a head coach anywhere except East Texas State after he gets blamed/fired for Saban's failures.

The more I watch Applewhite and Saban's Alabama, the more I appreciate Mike Shula as SMU's possible coach.

I do agree that Applewhite would be an excellent recruiter in Texas. If Saban fires him, I say we hire him as SMU's recruiting coodinator !
