women beat the frogs66-61!
Checked the gametracker
Dodds had 20 and 8 Wills had 14 and 6 Shepherd had 13 Great balance there. We were down 31-24 at the half so a great second half. Apparently, Hill -- our FW Dunbar girl -- hit some FTs down the stretch. That's a nice win over a solid program that knows how to get to the tournament. We also broke a five-game losing streak to them? Amen. Congrats, Rhonda and team.
From SMUMustangs.com:
Women’s Basketball Sends TCU Packing, 66-61 Sharee Shepherd ties SMU single-game steals record DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s basketball team rallied from a second-half deficit as large as 11 points and got over the .500 mark in the early season with a 66-61 win Tuesday night over Metroplex rival TCU at Moody Coliseum. Three players scored in double figures for the Mustangs (2-1): senior post Janielle Dodds scored a game-high 20 points, sophomore forward Delisha Wills scored 14 and senior wing Sharee Shepherd added 13. Shepherd also tied the school record for steals in a single game with eight. The mark had been reached five times before by four players  including current SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola. The Mustangs became the first opponent in the last 26 games to trail TCU at halftime and rally for the win. The Mustangs were down, 31-24, at the intermission after shooting just 26.7 percent from the field in the first half. The Mustangs took a more physical approach in the second half, pounding the ball inside to Dodds and Wills. Two key Frogs  Lorie Butler-Rayford and Micaela Younger  fouled out, and the Ponies hit 29-of-37 (78.4 percent) of their free throws in the victory. Dodds went 10-for-13 from the line, and freshman guard LaShandra Hill drained five of six free throws in the last minute to seal the win. The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum this weekend in the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament. SMU plays Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday night, and then plays either Kansas or Drake Saturday (at 5 p.m. if the Mustangs lose to Western Michigan, or at 7 p.m. if SMU beats the Broncos). What a great performance by the Ponies tonight!
LaShandra Hill hit a bunch of free throws at the end, and looked totally calm at the line in a tight game against a traditional rival. VERY smooth - wouldn't mind getting the ball to her at the end of close games. Janielle Dodds seemed to get jump-started in this one. She was kind of flat against A&M, I thought, and started the same way tonight. Then some stupid Frog fell on her and wouldn't let her up, and after that, she kicked it up to a higher gear. Very strong in the second half. We beat TCU without a big game from Delisha Wills. Very encouraging. Sharee Shepherd was everywhere. She gets a little sloppy every now and then with her ball-handling and her shot selection, but damn, that kid can play some defense. Didn't realize she had that many steals, but it's not a total surprise. She was terrific. Hats off to the seniors, who never had beaten the silly Frogs before. Well-deserved win. WAY TO GO, PONIES!
Good game! The officiating sucked (nothing new) and we didn't play to the level that we did during the tamu game; however, the sign of a good team is when they can win when they aren't playing well.
Honestly, I think that we should have beat tamu. If Delisha was able to play the entire game, we might have beat the #11 team. This is a team to get excited about. "He was quoting the Bible, Revelations. 'Behold the pale horse.' The man who 'sat on him was Death... and Hell followed with him.'"
"You tell 'em I'm coming... and hell's coming with me!"
Couldn't agree more. The team looks good, and perhaps most encouraging, can be a lot better. The officiating against TCU was awful, but didn't decide the game. At one point, Janielle Dodds got whistled for a foul (a big deal, since she fouled out later) when she was about 10 feet away from two other players who made contact. How the three blind mice accidentally picked out the only 6-foot-3 blonde on the floor is something we'll never know  but despite Dodds' absence, the right team won. At least the zebras were equally incompetent for the Ponies and the Froggies. You're right  they could have beaten A&M, but losing was probably a good thing. (I know  no coach says there's such thing as a good loss, and that includes Rhonda Rompola.) The reason is because they played well enough to win. They know they can play with a nationally ranked team, but by losing, it's also clear that they have to finish the game and play smart. It's also good that the win at A&M-Corpus Christi was as close as it was. To be honest, TAMU-CC is an average-at-best team. But they had a kid get really hot in the second half, heaving in 3s from all over the place, and since SMU was kind of sloppy, the hot shooter nearly led TAMU-CC to an upset. SMU is good, but not good enough to sleep through a game, even against a team like that. A road win is always a good thing, even by a narrow margin. The win over TCU, of course, was awesome  in large part because it was TCU. Sharee Shepherd was everywhere: scoring, rebounds and tying the school record with eight steals. Dodds looked like she got pissed off in the second half, and when she did, the Frogs couldn't do anything to stop her. Ponies play Western Michigan at 7 PM tomorrow (Friday), and either at 5 or 7 Saturday against Drake or Kansas.
If the women can beat KU tomorrow that will really help their rpi. KU is currently #4 in rpi.

That's really weird. SMU's RPI actually fell the other day when we beat Froggy High, because RCU already had a loss. Now Kansas comes into today's game and beats Drake, and it falls - someone at Moody said Kansas had the No. 1 RPI in the country at the start of the day.
Whatever - beat the Jayhawks!
