If PX heard Bartel is gone, then he's probably gone because PX has a great deal of cred here. I agree with PX why didn't Bennett switch to his freshman in the fourth quarter? At least he would have gotten a few reps at game speed. On the other hand, perhaps he hadn't had any reps during the week (except to run Boise's plays) and Bennett didn't just want to throw him in cold without practicing with the first team. I hope that Tate isn't quitting so that we have someone to back-up for the rest of this year. That said, Florida's true freshman has looked pretty good the last two weeks and hopefully after Tulsa, Rice, and La. Tech, he'll be ready to surprise TCU. My greater concern is that the defense has suddenly started to give up yards in bunches.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Many of the posters on this board make Johnny sick. SMU has not been successful in almost two decades. We finally get a coach that has coached at many successful programs and you blame him for everything. Reality check #1: SMU has inferior talent than almost everyone we play this season due to a lack of commitment from SMU and self-imposed recruiting restrictions. Reality check #2: Richard Bartel and Tate Wallis are not good college quarterbacks. I would take the opposing teams quarterbacks over those two any day. We struggle to get first downs and have the lowest rated offense in Division 1 in large part due to horrible quarterback play. Phillips is better and will produce more first downs and points the rest of the season. Reality check #3: Many of Bennett's recruits are better than the current players or will be when they are through playing and Bennett will continue to recruit better players than what he inherited. Johnny is glad that Bennett is taking proactive steps to improve the team.

Ok guys be gentle with me i am new.... I have also heard a rumor that the situation with the qbs started before sat game. didnt they play a scrimage game or something on thurs? well i heard that bartel and wallis got into a fight or was fighting with the refs and the police were called out. this in conjunction with their attitudes with the coaching staff is why they were kicked off the team. Can anyone shed light on this for me confirm or deny it?

newfan, yeah both guys were playing in a game on Thursday and the police had to be called out on Bartel. After being brought in yesterday and talked to, he quit. As far as I know, Tate is still on the team.

Wait-
They got in a fight with each other? I'm confused now. I was thinking they quit together, because they were friends.

Where is JAF when you need him? Clear this up.

My sources say there was an incident at an SMU campus intramural game this past Thurs where the campus police had to be called and that Bartel was involved.

An intramural game? Not sure where this story is going. What, were he and Wallis on opposing intramural teams that couldn't even score on each other?

This just keeps sounding worse and worse.

Corby thinks Johnny Rock should learn more about football than to get on and critique his school's quarterback play. Do you witness the offense that is being run? Do you realize how easy it is to defend. Not only is it completely predictable, it is far less complex. Me thinks Johnny could probably learn this offense in a day.
It's not Richard's fault the pass plays called involve one, maybe two receivers with no actual read. It is, in this order, call hut, look at the one receiver he is supposed to read, realize he's covered, then begin ducking from all out blitzes.
Everyone says the protection is awful. BS. When opposing teams blitz EVERY PLAY with an emphasis to stop the run, what else can a QB do? Well, unfortunately for Bartel, it's to scramble. Maybe Phillips can do that better.
Go to any game that displays an accredited offensive scheme and realize how porous our plan is. Then again, we could just watch every team SMU plays because they seem to have great offenses.
Please don't try to argue with me, I know football very well and enjoyed a decent career. For those that never played but have invested so much as fans, you were and will always be appreciated, but don't ignore some glaring weaknesses that this scheme has.
Blame current players, Cavan's last recruiting classes etc, but as games are played on Saturdays, the real work is put in Sunday through Friday. It is the head coaches job to generate a sound game plan, motivate players through practice, and have them emotionally and mentally prepared for when they take the field on Saturday. Don't be misled by my feelings. I am a supporter of Phil Bennett and have been since day one, but I am a bigger supporter of the players and their families that have to be subjected to a pretty shoddy situation. This is a public forum for fans to vent and hide behind screennames, so much of the information could be iffy at best.
With that said, please don't buy into all the spin that is heard here, because being on both sides of this situation, there is only so much that belongs on websites. I feel it is somewhat of a duty to divulge some truth, though, when people are being attacked without knowing the full situation. Bartel was somewhere he should not have been and got into a skirmish that should not have taken place. He should be justly punished. But being run off is not justice. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. He'll probably go one and either become a Cy Young winner or 1st round pick in football, that's just how SMU luck goes. But understand that there are so many problems within that program right now that starting a freshman QB is far from just what we need.

Ok.....what I heard from a guy who was there (take it for what it is)....Bartel, and Wallis were trying to run a play where they threw two forward passes Bartel took the snap, tossed it over to Wallis, who then proceeded to throw even furthur downfield. The ref threw a flag, and called a penalty for throwing two forward passes. Bartel, got upset and confronted the ref, and words were exchanged, I didn't hear about the police, I heard that some other football players that were there stepped in before anything other than words were exchanged, and there was nothing said about what Tate was doing the whole time. Anyway, I wasn't there so this is only what I heard from someone who was.

I guess we can only speculate at this point. Hopefully Bennett isn't an a-hole behind closed doors and runs people off like Cavan, granted those were much better Qb's.

Jesus, people. Give Bennett some cred here. You can't tolerate continued disrespect. Bartel has shown time and again that he doesn't agree with Bennett's coaching style. Bartel may be a great QB, but he never will be under Bennett because all they do it butt heads.

So long Richard. I hope he at least tries to finish the season. As T would say, quitters are suckas.

By the way, what the hell are football players doing playing on intramural teams?

You gotta be kidding me. Our fricking starting qb was playing intramural ball two nights before a game? Not only is he stupid enough to do that, he is stupid enough to lose his composure over it and try to start a fight with an intramural ref? I'm sorry but that is the dumbest, most irresponsible thing I can imagine. I'd rather see a guy get drunk chasing girls the night before a game. Intramurals? What a joke.
