"I'm history," Bennett said. "It took a hell of a game to get me out of here. But I'm out."
"I'd play 10 of those games before I'd lose by 40-something," said SMU QB Justin Willis, a sophomore. "I guess the Bennett Era is over now. It's time for a change. Hopefully the change will start new things."
Bennett, who finished 18-52 at SMU, said he decided to go for it instead of kicking a field goal because his injury-riddled defense was hurting. He said he probably would run the same play – called 18Q – again.
"We were 1-10," Willis said. "You've got to go for it."
"It's just sad," SMU senior linebacker Wilton McCray said. "Your career is over, the coaches are leaving. It's not the way anybody pictured the season. To end our season like that ... I'm just so tired of the same movie playing over and over again."
